Is pregnancy considered a pre-existing condition?

I'm just curious, I'm getting married next month and FH and I are eager to start trying soon after that. My catch is that it's possible I may lose my job in October. So my question is if I was to get a new job would that health insurance accept me? I guess I should add that FH doesn't have insurance, he's on mine now too.

Re: Is pregnancy considered a pre-existing condition?

I believe it would in most cases but you should call the Co. to find out.

I know my sister doesn't currently have maternity care on her coverage, and if she increased the level after she was PG they wouldn't cover her.....

Re: Is pregnancy considered a pre-existing condition?

No its not.. I switched over to Dh insurance when i was 4 months pregnant. and there was no problem. the nurse at the Dr's office just wrote a note to the new insurance company that I was covered by another company and the benefits just continue.

Re: Is pregnancy considered a pre-existing condition?

Check with your insurance company because I thought that it would be considered a pre-existing condition. To be safe, when you get married, have your DH add you to his insurance right away.

Re: Is pregnancy considered a pre-existing condition?

No I dont think it is. My company switched Insurance in November and I became pregnant in December. I just had to provide them with proof of prior coverage. The new carrier (GHI) said pregnancy is never considered pre-existing. I would just check with the carrier but I am pretty sure it isnt.

Re: Is pregnancy considered a pre-existing condition?

I got pregnant about 2 months before I got insurance. I called my OBGYN told them that I believed I was pregnant. He gave me a prescrption for pre-natal vitamins. And when my insurance came in I went to for my 1st appoitment.

Re: Is pregnancy considered a pre-existing condition?

Thank you so much for your responses. I've been thinking about this (I'm the worrrier between us)

I'll do some more research but my main worry was being pregnant, getting a new job with new insurance and being denied.

Thanks again!

Re: Is pregnancy considered a pre-existing condition?

But for disability reasons it is pre-existing. I would wait till I had my insurance settled because you may have to change hospitals or doctors if they do not accept your new insurance plan.

Re: Is pregnancy considered a pre-existing condition?

I think if you have current coverage, and continue it with Cobra if necessary, then the new plan should cover it. I had previously been told that as long as any condition was covered by your previous insurance, it was covered under the new insurance, as long as there was not a lapse in coverage.

Re: Is pregnancy considered a pre-existing condition?

Recent Changes To The Law
In 1996, a law was introduced to the pre-existing condition forum. The HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) determined that there are certain conditions health insurance carriers may and may not cover. HIPAA defines a pre-existing condition as:

'A condition (whether physical or mental), regardless of the cause of the condition, for which medical advice, diagnosis, care or treatment was recommended or received within the 6 month period ending on the enrollment date.'

In effect, insurance carriers cannot exclude:

Newborns
Pregnancy (even late entrants)
Adopted children or children placed for adoption under 18 years
