I was bit by an insect yesterday at the beach and my arm is soooo swollen that I can't straighten it bc it's right on my elbow. It's also radiating heat! What should I put on it, or do you think it's an emergency that I should goto a doctor? (have no insurance)
Thanks!

Re: Is there a Dr/nurse in the house???
I am far from a nurse or Dr But you may need a Steroid shot or Cortizone Maybe some Benadryl

I am not a dr either, but benadryl or benadryl cream. If it doesn;t go away you may need to see someone- a friend of mine recently got bit by something and his ankle swelled- he needed antibiotics.

I just checked out WebMD and they have a questionnaire for you. It may be helpful. Hope it's nothing serious.Web MD

OK, the previous link is not working. I'll try it again. Web MD again
It looks like the link is working. Just click on 'Arm/Elbow' and look for insect bites.
Feel better!

Call your doctor or if it's really bad. Go to the Emergency room. It's better to go to the E.R once with out insurance then end up getting really sick and having alot of Dr. bills and other trips to the dr. You'll find away to pay the bill. YOu don't want to not do anything just because you don't have insurance

Re: Is there a Dr/nurse in the house???
Sorry, I have no clue what you can put on it. But I just wanted to say that there is an office called 'FirstMed' by my house in Bayside. It's a place that you can go to when you're sick or have an injury, that's not an emergency situation. I think a visit only costs about $75. Maybe you can look in your yellow pages and see if you have a place like that by your house.
Hope you feel better

Re: Is there a Dr/nurse in the house???
This happened to my niece last week. She was bit by something in her knee area, and it was so swollen that she couldn't bend her leg! It was also hot and kind of 'hard' in a way. So my sister took her to the ER and they gave her a special cream to put on. I'm not sure what the cream was, though. They told her that some people have strong reactions to bites, and that's all it was.
On the other hand, signs of infection are warmth, swelling, redness, red streaking, fever, or pus from the site. If you develop any of those, I would see a doctor.
It's probably just a strong reaction to the bite, but keep an eye on it!

Three20 were you able to find out what it was? I hope you are okay...By the way FirstMed is great if you need help & your dr. is closed or for emergencies, etc.
Hope everything is ok.

Re: Is there a Dr/nurse in the house???
I put some cortizone on it last night and the swelling was much better today, and it wasn't hot anymore! Thanks for all your suggestions! Thankfully a trip to the dr. was not necessary!
