Is there anything youre doing with your wedding that is very different from the norm?

What is it?

Anthony & I are just so goofy and all into having fun. Were going to have the normal songs for the ceremony, but when his uncle pronounced us man and wife our DJ is going to blast..

'I feel good' by James Brown as we walk down the aise!! It is so totally us! I knwo our family & friends will love it and it will set the scene for our party!!

Absoluetly crazy?

I am also having my 3 year old son walk me down the aisle with my dad.

Were donating to the widows and childrens fund and not having favors

Were going to have a birthday cake because my sons birthday is a few days later.

Not doing garter or boquet toss
Giving the bouquet to my mom as a surprise. (She deserves it)

Im having my cousin sing barracuda at the reception just because I like it!!

Hmmm.. Ill keep thinking..

1. Walking down the aisle by myself... at 34 no one is giving me away.

2. Leaving my deceased mom's chair empty.

3. Having a breakaway remembrance bo-kay and placing it on her seat when I approach the canopy.

4. only a MOH and BM

5. A wedding program that has bios of all bride, groom , MOH and BM andd an explanation of our interfaith traditions and the history behind them.

6. gettting married on a Monday, July 4th.

Other things not so different:

- no bokay toss, garter toss, parent dances

-fairly small guest list, only 90, didn't want a huge list

-we are not staying at the same hotel as our guests.

-daytime wedding but NO after party

-rehearsal brunch instead of a dinner.

I am a 40 year old bride who's getting married for the second time but it's my first actual wedding (first time was in the courthouse). That's first thing out of the norm.

My 19 year old son will escort me down the aisle and I will dance with him instead of my dad.

I'm only having a MOH (my daughter)

No bo-k or garter toss

Having a ceremonial passing of the bo-k to my baby sister who's eloping on Nassau Island two weeks before my wedding.

Were are doing several things that would be considered 'different from the norm.'

--Our ceremony will be at the Fire Island Lighthouse

--We are having a breakfast brunch instead of a dinner reception

--Instead of a DJ or typical wedding band, we are having a band that plays traditional maritime music (and FH is a member of the band, so he will sit on with the band during the reception).

Other things:

--No bouquet/garter toss

--I'm just having a MOH, no other attendants

--No flower girl/ring bearer

--We probably won't do a first dance

Oh yeah.

No siblings in the bridal party. My sisters are grateful. His sisters aren't. Oh well. They are big girls, they will get over it.

Have ou ever posted any of your program? Iknow now you must be so busy, but when you get a chance, i'd love to see your explanations regarded the interfatih aspects of the ceremony.

I love the first dance being a fast dance with all of the guests!

Nothing much but my brother is walking me down the aisle; no father daughter/mother son dance but an 'inlaw dance'; no bo-k or garter toss; no electric slide or funky chicken or any of those dances

My mom and dad walked me down the aisle...not 'huge' different (I understand that's how it's done for all Jewish weddings) but for my Spanish guests it was 'really' different.

We also chose to give wine instead of some ceramic thingie as favors...again, not 'really' different, but for my guests it was.

We named our tables after diamonds instead of numbering...again, not 'really' different, but for my guests it was.

I could go on and on...since a lot of things were not 'typical' for my guests.

july06bride - a few 'Spanish' things we did were:

Pre-wedding:
1) My invitations were a vertical french fold and the wording was in Spanish and English

Day of:
1) Had a bi-lingual church ceremony
2) Did not have the hall hand out favors, instead we personally handed them out to our guests once we either made it to their table or they came to us to greet us
3) Did not have a card box or bird cage or anything like that because it is customary for the bride and groom to go to every table and greet their guests...then get the envelope
4) Hired a Latin owned DJ company and had a bi-lingual MC so all announcements were made in Spanish
5) Had one of DH's brother serve as 'Padrino'; this was in addition to the Best Man

But these are not really 'Spanish' I think they're mostly old school (except for #5)...it's just that our families have not moved up with the times. There are actual traditions you can do like:

1) Arras - the exchanging of 13 coins during the ceremony
2) Lazos - or lazos de amor, placing a rope in a figure 8 shape around the bride and groom during the ceremony
3) Padrinos - asking 'older' relatives or people close to you to symbolicly stand for you at the ceremony. It used to be that padrinos and madrinas paid for certain aspects of the wedding (it is certainly true in oresent day Mexico) but it seems that lately they're mostly symbolic.

There's a 'Latin Brides' thread with a lot of info...definitely worth a read.

Hope I helped, FM me if you have more questions!

I'm sticking to mostly traditional stuff because it is what I always wanted. But one thing that is different for me is that we are having cigars with our names on them and having them handed out. Also we may not wrap our favors but just put a ribbon on it and our favors will be suncatchers.
Also we will be making chocolate bars for all the guests. Just a few minor differences from all the weddings I have been to, but nothing big.

I really want our dog to walk down the aisle but I'm not sure if that is going to work!
