Is this just superstition or is it actually bad?

My FMIL and FSIL gave me lingerie for my bridal shower and it was all black. My family says that it means that my FILs are mourning the fact that I am marrying into their family. I thought that they were just giving me tacky lingerie.

What does everyone think about this?

Well on a positive note, if you said the lingerie is ugly and the wrong size, you are going to return it, arent you??

So if its back in the store, and not in your house.......I think you're good to go

Black is really sexy... anyway I'm from a Caribbean background and my mother always tell me not to put black on the bed, I reall y dont know the meaning to much behind it but i listen.

I wouldn't even worry about it. And honestly, a month before your wedding your family shouldn't be telling you that your in-laws are mourning you coming into the family! That's just not nice!

I do feel the need to defend my family - they are not from this country and they have all of their own superstitions - they weren't being mean. They were just telling me some old Italian superstition, like they always do.

Girl...I hear you! I come from a very superstitious Italian family. I think you're fine though.

I have never heard that superstition before, but I did ask my FMIL not to wear black (or white) to the wedding!!

Personally I love black better than white. Though FH says nothing is the best. Wearing something is more trouble than it's worth. How do you think my old school family would like it if I told them what he says???

My FIL are Indian- they have a bunch of wierd superstitions too. I don't listen to any of it b/c I refuse to believe it. Wait until FMIL hears that we are seeing each other before the ceremony!! HAHA!

I have friends who have old-school Croatian families and Jewish families and they never even heard of getting lingerie at a bridal shower! They thought I was nuts when I told them this is done! To each their own!

Look at it this way. If they gave you a special family heirloom or just a butt ugly thing that you never wanted, you could put it in a closet and bring it out when that person comes to your home - I am sure MANY of us do this or know people who do.

In the case of lingerie, simply TELL that person how 'turned on' your FH was on the honeymoon as you spent a passionate night on the balcony of your honeymoon hotel - so passionate that he threw it off the balcony into the ocean.

It is a stretch but its not like they are going to ask you to model the lingerie again!
