is this legal?

first to make people work on Sunday for no additional pay

and second to hold a sales meeting on Palm Sunday of all sundays? The higher ups at my company are almost all Jewish- they would never plan something on one of there holidays- why is it ok to pan something on one of mine

I am livid- and I am not going- what are you going to do dock me pay- oh right your not paying me

Stand your ground. I would not work on a religous holiday. If you are a exempt employee, it doesn't matter what day of the week you work. If you are hourly, then it does matter.

Are you hourly or salaried (exempt)?

It is possible that when scheduling the meeting they didn't realize it was Palm Sunday. I know that I have no clue when Palm Sunday is.

they know- I told them- and they said they knew

I am salaried- but I have to fill out a work schedule and it doesn't have a saturday and sunday box

regardless I do not plan on attending- my Boss wont care- but I just find it very rude

I think it's completely out of line- I was was mad before when it was just Sunday at 7:30am- but once I realized it was Palm sunday - I went over the edge

that's a holiday to me- I go to my Grandmas- she comes back for florida for it- it's a big deal- (we are italian- in case you couldn't tell)

Well I do think its awful to schedule a meeting without pay on a sunday.
As for the holiday thing, well I'm coming from the other side here and there are plenty of jewish holidays when offices are not closed. We have to take vacation/personal days if we want to celebrate these holidays if they do not happen to fall on a weekend.

2 yrs ago my FORMER (thank GOD) boss decided he was going to have an intensive 7 DAY training, including weekends! the Sunday of this training was also Palm Sunday and HR told my boss (a-hole) that he has NO RIGHT to say a word to anyone who doesn't show that day since it's a holiday.

oh, and it was daylight savings time too, so we lost an hour of sleep before that Sunday!

did I mention he's an A-hole?

stand your ground! but talk to HR first.

ETA: I am Jewish and Passover also fell during this training. I don't normally take a day off for Passover, but I did that time!

I don't care what religion you are - what crackhead schedules a meeting on Sunday at 7:30am?

And they KNOW that you take Palm Sunday that seriously and they don't care? Who on LI doesn't know that the jewish sabbath is on Saturday and the christian sabbath is on Sunday?

I don't think that is right AT all....

Also, you have a right to miss work due to religious observance/holidays, etc... and they couldn't punish you for taking off...
