My photo/videographer is asking for 50% of the total cost by next week. I'm not getting married until September. Is this a normal thing? I always thought I'd have to give him 50% a few months before the wedding and then pay him the rest at the wedding.

I don't think so...all of my vendors have said pay as much as you want, when you want, up till a certain point (2 weeks before the wedding, etc.) when a minimum amount of the total must be in....
Sounds a little odd to me!

Check your contract!!!
My contract with the photographer clearly states that a deposit is due upon signing and then 1 month before date of event, 50% is due. The other half is due when proofs arrive.
If your contract states that you have to pay by next week, then so be it. But if it does not spell that out, or any payment arrangements for that matter, then kindly refer him to the contract and remind him

it all depends on the vendor - my musiciand are required 50% of the cost 6 months in advance.
If it was 100% I would be worried.

We are getting married in September and I think we have to pay 30 or 40% of the balance in June.

Our videographer asked for a 50% deposit and the rest is due at the wedding (or a week before by certified check or money order).
Our photog only asked for a $500 deposit. Hope this helps!

I agree. I paid 20% when I booked and my contract says 30% three months before, 40% one month before and 10% when I go and pick up the proofs.

it depsends on the contract but if not you would have to in june
