i thought it was like a certain dollar amount per person...

That sounds prettty typical. The 20% service charge is for the cooks and busboys, not the rest of them.

Typically, tou tip $3-$5 per guest for the maitre d and the captain and bridal attendant is usually a couple hundred.

I can tell you from experience, from working at a RH that the 'service charge' is not given to the above mentioned people as their tip. it's used for the paychecks and as she had mentioned above kitchen staff, bus boys etc. So just FYI it's not extra cash in anyones pocket. unfortunately just another expense..
I used to bridal attend and standard tip was $100 (this was 2003/4). These girls are at your beck and call and do everything and anything you need. So her I will take care of as well as Maitre 'd. The rest of the wait staff and bartenders FH and I will tip out because we've been in the business and know what it's like.
I hope this helped

I agree.

Is your problem with the fact that you're supposed to tip these people or that the hall is telling you you have to and how much? Because I fully plan on tipping them, but my hall didnot say I had to or how much. If they had, I'd probably be pretty pissed.

Tipping, while a social standard, is still supposed to be optional 'to insure promptness' and should be based on the quality of the job done. Tell them you'll tip how you see fit. If the hall isworried about how much those attendants are getting paid, they can raise their salaries. Otherwise, shut up.

But, if you're worked up about tipping them at all... well, they do work hard for you and are providing a service, so they DO deserve to be tipped assuming they do their job as expected/beyond what's expected.

It is standard, at our final meeting it was written down as to what was suggested as the tip for the Maitre D and the Bridal Attendants and then its up to us whether or not if we wanted to tip more than that

my RH says typically that maitr'd gets $3-$5 per person and your bridal attendant gets $100 tip.

agreed. This is what our contract states as well. The wait staff never sees a dime from that 20% so that's why the suggest the $3-$5 per person.
