going to a broadway show in the afternoon (taking the train into the city and back to long island) and then going to dinner somewhere back on Long Island?
This is one of the things I wanted to do for my bachelorette party- some of my bridesmaids are fine with it while others think it is too expensive.
We have pretty much decided this is a go, and will be ordering tickets on Friday, but I can't help but feel that I am putting people out . . .

Not over the top or expensive in my opinion.

But how much are you asking them to spend? Most of the bachelorette parties I've been to have been away for the wkend and we've spent around 350. That doesnt seem like it will be nearly as much for what you are doing. If you are really concerned maybe you can find an inexpensive place to have dinner?

Not over the top, not utterly expensive. It is a symbolic night and your last (if not close to it) evening out with friends as a Miss. I totally think it's OK, affordable and fun. You only get married once, it's not like you're asking them to fly down to the Bahamas.

the same price as drinking all night - and much preferred in my book. Don't feel bad, just set it in perspective for them if anyone complains - you can lightly add that a night of drinking in NYC would top the price of the ticket!

This is exactly what we did for my grandparents as a xmas present. FI and I took his daughter and my grandparents to see Beauty and the Beast. It's much less expensive to eat on LI than the city, so that's not over the top. I could understand some people having problems with it, but if you go to an off-broadway show (and there are some good ones out now) and then an inexpensive restaurant you can prob do it for about $100 each. See if you can get group rates at the show, that'll def help.

We are going to be seeing Mamma Mia. I have to see how many people want to go . . . we may be over 8, which might qualify for a group rate . . .

I don't think this is over the top. We are actually thinking of doing the same thing. I've seen Mamma Mia and it was soooooooooo good that we might end going to see that again. Only 2 of us have seen it. I totally recommend it. You'll have a blast!

If cost is a concern, you may want to think about getting tickets to a off-Broadway show, or even an off-off-Broadway show (there really are specific designations!).
IMHO, some of the smaller productions are better than the Broadway shows, but it all depends on your taste. Check out some of the shows/plays at www.smarttix.com and see if you're interested in any of them.
I recently saw Boozy: The Life, Death, and Subsequent Vilification of Le Corbusier and, more importantly, Robert Moses. It was fantastic!

its not over the top at all - but its expensive to anyone that does not have the money. if i were you id tell them that either you wont be offended if they cant make it - or- offer to pay for yourself or something- just a suggestion

Expensive for a regular Friday night but certainly not for a Bachlerette party. That is a very special night for you!

If that's all you are doing, that I say no. It may be pushing it for some people because shows can be pretty expensive.
You should look into some prix fixe dinners in the city on the theater district. They are pretty reasonable.
If you did lunch before the show it may be cheaper.

As an alternative...why don't you do a Shakespeare in the Park night- you get a high quality show, and you can have a cool picnic in the park or go to a restaurant after....best of all, the play is FREE! I am not sure what it is this year, but it's always with a star-studded cast!

I don't think it's too expensive or over the top at all. It actually sounds like a great evening. Many people today do bachelorette weekends, which is what we are doing for my cousin and it's easily costing us almost $1,000 each.

I personally find it a bit ridiculous when people want their BMs to spend a bunch of money on a bach party. They've already spent tons of cash on wedding related expenses. It's a nice time to get together with the girls, but you don't need to spend tons of money to have a good time with your friends, do you? It's not the last time you're ever going to be able to go out with your friends.

Doesnt sound too bad to me. I am doing something simialr, we are going to the city for dinner and a play and then going to my MOH house. Sleeping over and the next day she is haveing a massage therapist come in and we'll get massages, facials..nice and relaxing! No one has really complained to me about the cost!
