a friend of mine recently got engaged. she is looking at RHs and Churches.
She has been told by several churches that they do not do weddings the entire 40 days of lent. is this correct? i believe lent starts this year on Feb 6

I wasn't sure but I asked me mom and she said that she's heard that before. A lot of Catholic churches definitely do this!

I don't know about all faiths, but I know those that observe Lent don't do weddings during Lent. ie: Catholics, Episcopalians, etc... won't do weddings during Lent.

Thats NOT true. I WORK for a Catholic Church. We most definitely perform weddings during Lent. During Lent there are certain changes to the wedding liturgy (ie there is no holy water for blessing, the word Alleluja isnt sung) but there is no liturgical reason for a wedding not to be performed. It might just be the decision of the particular pastor at that church but it is NOT a liturgical 'rule' that weddings cannot be performed during Lent. Absolutely not. They can be.

Yes, in the Greek-Orthodox faith, the 40 days of lent is off-limits, and a period of time before Christmas, too.

Not sure about Lent, but I know I tried to get married on the Assumption of Mary and my church said they would not marry me then.

Yeah, you cant get married (or have a funeral!) on a Holy Day of Obligation.
I bet if you had lots of cash tho they'd let it slide

I know they can be, but some priests do not like to do it, like heather says above. I know my friend was warned by the priest that he could do a wedding, but it would be a somber ceremony.
