Is this right or fair?

Is this right or fair?

This year my (new) boss decided how 'nice' it would be that we have, instead of ordering food for our annual holiday lunch, have a potluck lunch.

I hate this idea. First off, I'm cutting back on gift giving in the first place. Now I'm asked to spend money and make something to schlep on a train to work? And it has to be enough for 15 people. I have a small kitchen and I am not in the mood to come home and cook for 15 people the next day. Plus one woman keeps kosher, so she can't even eat what I make since I am not jewish. (I don't think she minds but still, she still has to buy her own food now).

What do you guys think? I'm half inclined to not come in that day. I know why it's being done - the firm doesn't want to pay for it.
Then why can't we shell out money ourselves for lunch? It's ridiculous being asked to do this.
I think I'll just buy a box of cookies.
I'm not a great cook anyway.

Oh yes and what if our meal requires being heated? Our microwaves are not that big and there's no oven here.

GRRRR! I hate when people think up ideas like this before thinking who may be inconveinanced by them!!!!!

I hate this idea to. Our co likes to do this for thanksgiving but we didnt do it this year. I usually get the paper products or soda.

My dad worked for ConEd for 30 years, and his department did this every year. Everyone loved it, to be honest. They made a whole family day of it, inviting spouses and children to spend the day and having Santa give out presents. So it wound up being you had to bring in food for 30 or 40, but no one complained. Everyone was really in the spirit of it.

Why not suggest everyone chip in and order from a local restaurant?

We'll probably do that.

It's just that we know she only suggested it becuase she's trying to save money. Which, if we knew that all the departments were asked to do this, then we wouldn't be too upset. But my co-worker asked around and other departments are having lunches catered in and they are not paying for it themselves.

She's just trying to make herself look good to the 'powers that be' by being Miss Frugal. (She's also driving us crazy in the meantime).

Re: Is this right or fair?

we used to do this at the place i worked for thanksgiving and it was always a big hit. i think it's nice to see what people's favorite dishes are. we're doing one this year at my new job as well and it's an international theme. you could just bake a pie or cake or something. i don't know i guess if you're used to doing something different it sucks, but i like the idea.

Actually if we do this, I will say that!

But I think we decided not to do it at all. Others dont' have the time either. I think next year in Oct I'm going to suggest a 'gift swap'.
And ask if we can play a holiday CD during the day. I think that's more fun than lunch considering we can't all 'close up' for an hour and eat together anyway - people always need to be by the phones or computer at our dept!

Thanks girls
