Is this tacky?

Original post by wilmetted

I want you honest opinions so I am not saying which one of us (FH and I) suggested this so you do not choose sides.

We are on a strict budget and we have our rehearsal dinner set to the penny. I am currently not working at the moment and we have very litt=le help from elsewhere. Yesterday, one of us had to tell someone who asked if they could come to the rehearsal dinner no.

Today one of us suggested that an extra person can come but split a plate with another person.

Is it this tacky to have three people split two plates at a rehearsal dinner at a country club.

Thanks for your help and I know this is a little wierd.

I don't know if I would consider it 'tacky' but inappropriate, yes. i would just explain that you have a limit and unfortunately you have met your limit. These types of situations are tough and I understand that you feel bad not being able to invte them. I also think it's respectable that you are thinking of ways to try to accommodate them. i would just let them down easily. Good luck!

I think it is a bit tacky, are you sure the RH would allow it?

I think I'd tell the guest no or invite them and pay for the plate.

I think it is tacky. It is better to say no; people need to understand you can not afford to inivite everyone you may want to. Plus - it is rude of that person to invite themselves.

I forgot to mention that it was the guest that suggested that they could share a plate with another person. They did not consult us they made the decision on their own and they informed my FH and he told me.

I asked FH and he suggests you just tell the extra person they can't come. People understand that everyone can't be invited. If the guest is the one who suggested they could share the plate they understand that you have a tight budget.

I'm not sure if tacky is the right word but I wouldn't do it; even if the hall/restaurant allowed it, which I doubt.

That is not the right thing to do. I doubt the club would allow you to do that anyway. If you can't afford for that person to be there then they should not be there. Explain that the reheearsal dinner is for those that are part of the bridal party and that's all. You would like to have them there but you cant. I you don't feel comfortable with that then just put it on the club saying that they only have room for X amount of people.

I would have to say its tacky. plus I am not sure if catering halls will allow that since they would be technically loosing out on some money.

even if the guest suggested it, yes its still tacky. the fact that they even ASKED to come is kind of rude--and then saying 'hey we'll split a plate' is even ruder, IMHO.
