Is this tacky?

Is this tacky?

Ok, I know the answer to this, but while I was perusing the etiquette section of UltimateWedding.com today, I saw this question, and i felt a chill down my spine. Here's the question:
Is it tacky to invite people to your reception and ask them to bring their own alcohol? How do you phrase that on the invitiation? Help...
Is this tacky? IS THIS TACKY??? Are you kidding me?
What's funnier is another girl's response:
i wouldnt exactly state it on the invitation but here it seems like people bring their own alcohol no matter what.
And where exactly are you from?
Just when I thought I had seen it all...

No kidding! I have a general rule of thumb..if you have any question in your mind whether or not something is tacky, don't bother with the question, it's tacky.

I think what we have to keep in mind is that over at ultimateweddings.com, you have brides from all over the world...what may be tacky to us as new yorkers and other big city girls, may be more than ok for them.

My dh went to a weding in sc with only finger sandwiches and soda and taped music and it was considered highly elegant. Just my opinion.

I am all for the idea of having a small wedding with finger sandwiches if that's what's normal in your town, but any time you ask your guests to bring something is rude IMO. If you can't afford to serve alcohol, don't serve alcohol, it's as simple as that.

That has to be down South or something. I don't think a lot of places have the big weddings like we do in NY. I heard some places just serve punch instead of a meal.

Just put BYOB on the invite. That's what I'm doing.

Just kidding!!!

Re: Is this tacky?

My feeling is that when you host a wedding you are inviting people to your home- regardless of where the party is held. I don't charge my friends for drinks in my home, nor would I expect them to charge me for a drink in their home therefore I would never charge them for a drink at my wedding.
If someone wants to save money and host a small, punch and cake wedding that is fine by me. That isn't tacky at all. A wedding does not have to be a full sit down dinner but you should have it at the appropriate time of the day. A punch reception should be mid-day, not Saturday night at 5pm. In fact, if you don't want to serve alchol that is also fine, or serve only wine/beer in order to save money BUT do not allow your guests to pay for other drinks. Just don't have the bar serve it or say 'We are only serving wine or beer this evening' but the minute a guest must take out their wallet then I say it is tacky.

Re: Is this tacky?

I went to a wedding in Milwaukee once, but it was a perfectly nice affair! Not as grand as they make it here in NY, but still perfectly lovely! It was a sit down dinner with salad, main course, which we had to select on the RSVP, and desert! Also there was dancing, and nobody brought their own liquor! And it was a Russian wedding, so if anybody was going to bring their own liquor it would be them!

I guess middle America is much different than NY...

my uncle was married in Ohio...it was a dry county...so no alcohol!! My grandfather, father and uncles packed a bar load of alcohol in the truck and brought it to the wedding...

Re: Is this tacky?

I've never been to a wedding where you were asked to BRING your own beer, but in other places it's completely acceptable to have a cash bar.
(much to my dismay and my disapproval the first time it happened)
I've been to 2 weddings in England where that was the case and I'm pretty sure the wedding I'm going to next week in the UK will be the same.

As a matter of fact, our out of town guests thought that my parents must be wealthy in order to be able to 'afford' an open bar. LOL

The idea of open bar, it seems is regional to major cities and to the Northeast and West Coast, but in a lot of places you'll find it's not the case. Us NYers are a different breed. We assume that our way MUST be the right way, when really, the majority (or as ERica stated 'middle America' and outside the States) do not do things the way we do.
