Is this tacky?

Is this tacky?

We had an engagement party this past weekend, and I (stupidly) mentioned to a friend that I'm going to make up a spreadsheet recording the gifts we received from people to use as a reference for when it's our turn to give gifts. My friend got pissed and told me I was being tacky and obnoxious. I just want to reciprocate the gifts that we were given, especially to those who were overly generous with us. Do you think it's a dumb idea?

I have learned to never talk about gifts to people. They get weird. I do not think it is a bad idea to keep track of the gifts that you get. I know I did (but I do not tell people that I am). I would hate to have someone give me a check for $100 and then realize that I only give them $50!

I think it is a good idea to keep track of who gave you what iot do thank you notes. However using it to gage what you should spend on other peoples presents...I think that is tacky. Not everyone can afford to give large presents. MY FH family can't afford to give us anything and I already know not to expect anything from them. I am sure the gifts they do give us at the wedding wont come near to what we are paying per guest.

Focus on the fact that you are inviting the people you want most to be around you on your special day. Five or Ten years from know you will have wonderful memories because of your friends and family on your wedding. You wont remember dollar value of gifts because that is not important.

I don't think that's wrong at all and I probably would have said that to one of my friends too. Guess you learned not to tell anyone from that experience and I will learn from your experience as well and not tell anyone :p

I think its a great idea. My first wedding I kept track and my parents used the gifts for when family or friends had weddings so they didnt give too less. It def will come in handy down the road.

I don't think it's tacky as long as you don't talk about it. Though, a close friend I would think would be fine, but judging from her reaction I guess it was better kept to yourself!! lol

My parents always look at their checkbook history when giving presents at their friend's daughters/sons' weddings, they want to make sure they are fair and give each couple the same. That's pretty much the same idea.

this! For every major function, we always keep track of gifts! Plus it helps when you write your thank you notes because you can be specific about what you are actually thanking them for!

Sorry but crashing... NOT tacky at all.

It's actually needed - it helps with thank you's, helps you keep track of who gave what so if they ask you something about the gift you know W*T*F they are talking about LOL... okay, yea, it helps 'tally' it all up but it does soooo much more.

We had one for the e-party and now for the wedding.

tell your friend to sit on it and spin lol

If you think about, its done at almost EVERY bridal shower. There is always someone who get the unfortunate job of recording who gave what as a gift.

I always took track of what I was given so I knew how to write the thank you card.

not tacky, but you probably should have kept it to yourself. She needs to get over it.

Not Tacky at all. I did that too! Thats just one of those things that you really dont talk about even though everyone does it. I dont see what the big deal is but some people are so sensitive with stuff like that

my friends have all done that. I don't think its bad to do it, just wouldn't go spreading it around town.

I'm in agreement with the other girls...it's something everyone does, but no one really talks about (except on here or with close friends/family). It's something I would never mention to an acquaintance/co-worker.

I don't think it is tacky but I wouldn't talk about it either.

This. I think 'tacky' was just the word she used bc she was annoyed. People have so many of their own issues and it's sad that a lot of them will look for these kind of things to judge, and talk krap.

FH sister got married last year and bc we are having a smaller wedding and paying for things ourselves, our guestlist is tight. So if there are family friends that we are contemplating inviting we'll ask her if they def covered their plate. Like them or not, we can't afford someone who isn't family doing that. Tacky, call it what you want bc it is, what it is!

This! It makes sense to do this- it's embarrassing to undergive!
