I Have always done it because I want to be sure to reciprocate that amount back in the future. I don't think it's tacky, but I don't really tell people bc I hate talking money lol

I have learned to never talk about gifts to people. They get weird. I do not think it is a bad idea to keep track of the gifts that you get. I know I did (but I do not tell people that I am). I would hate to have someone give me a check for $100 and then realize that I only give them $50!
This! It makes sense to do this- it's embarrassing to undergive!
this!!! and I keep track of everything about the wedding so far...I make lists...it's what I do.

I think it is a good idea to keep track of who gave you what iot do thank you notes. However using it to gage what you should spend on other peoples presents...I think that is tacky. Not everyone can afford to give large presents. MY FH family can't afford to give us anything and I already know not to expect anything from them. I am sure the gifts they do give us at the wedding wont come near to what we are paying per guest.
Focus on the fact that you are inviting the people you want most to be around you on your special day. Five or Ten years from know you will have wonderful memories because of your friends and family on your wedding. You wont remember dollar value of gifts because that is not important.
I have to agree with this. I think it is perfectly fine to keep track of what was given to you as far as 'thank you's' go. But to keep track so you can give the same amount back in the future is kinda tacky. After all it is a gift and a gift isn't suppose to be reciprocated dollar for dollar, its the thought behind it and the gesture that counts. If person A gives you $1000 as a gift, does that mean are going to automatically give them $1000 for their next event when person B, who may be even closer to you and mean more to you may have only been able to afford $100, so then all they get back is $100 for their next function? If someone wants to, and can afford to be more generous in their gift giving it doesn't mean that another person who wasn't as generous didn't have the same thought or gesture behind the gift. That;s just my opinion though.

Re: Is this tacky?
I created a spreadsheet to keep track of gifts from the E-Party so I could remember who gave what for thank you notes. I think if you create one for this purpose it's fine, however if you create one so you can keep track of who gave what so you know what to give them, it's tacky. People get weird when it comes to discussing gifts so I'd probably only discuss stuff like this with my FH or family.

My FH's Aunt suggested I do this for the same reason. I found this to be helpful. I also agree that someone people get very funny with money issues.

Re: Is this tacky?
I think that this is something that many people do- I have done them for any big party/event in my life. I don't necessarily do it to keep track of who gave me what but it makes it so much easier to write thank yous. Also, when it is someone that isn't immediate family, it does make it easier to gauge gifts for their parties now. I don't think it is tacky to keep the list and use it in this manner, but I also wouldn't go telling people about it. I think many people, especially now, are very sensitive about money.

I do not think it's tacky at all however try and not discuss that with other people. That should be between you and FH and maybe your parents but other than that try not to mention it to anyone cause people can be so fickle in that subject.

Re: Is this tacky?
We kept track at ours....his mom actually wanted us to make her a list of her side & what they gave.
We made it for ourselves just to know what people gave & what we should be sure to give back. I'd feel bad if someone gave us $100 & we only gave back $50 for their occasion bc we didn't remember!

Sorry but crashing... NOT tacky at all.
It's actually needed - it helps with thank you's, helps you keep track of who gave what so if they ask you something about the gift you know W*T*F they are talking about LOL... okay, yea, it helps 'tally' it all up but it does soooo much more.
We had one for the e-party and now for the wedding.
tell your friend to sit on it and spin lol
AGREED!

Re: Is this tacky?
it's not tacky. At a friends wedding she had her mh and myself (bm) keep track of the list. It helped her personalize her thank you cards

Re: Is this tacky?
It is not tacky at all I will be keeping track of what presents I receive. It is good for when you are writing thank you notes and you want to put the exact item that that person gave you . ex: Dear so and so thank you so much for the formal china. It looks good that remembered what gift you got form someone.

We had an engagement party this past weekend, and I (stupidly) mentioned to a friend that I'm going to make up a spreadsheet recording the gifts we received from people to use as a reference for when it's our turn to give gifts. My friend got pissed and told me I was being tacky and obnoxious. I just want to reciprocate the gifts that we were given, especially to those who were overly generous with us. Do you think it's a dumb idea?
I did this and know many of my friends did it as well!
