I was out with my frieds and one of my girlfriends was like so how many carats is your ring? I felt rude that she asked me in front of everyone. It's pretty big and I love it so I'm not embarrased but I think its rude. When I told her she was shocked but I felt really on the spot, so I couldn't really think of a witty comeback.

Re: Is this tacky?
I think it is rude to ask anyone how many carats their ring is. Even if it was a tiny chip you would love so no need to justify loving it. The size of a diamond is not a reflection on the amount someone is loved nor the quality of their relationship. I would just tell her 'it is the perfect size for me'. and leave it at that.

Re: Is this tacky?
I think its horribly rude. I had an ex boyfriend ask me that too..who cares what carat it is..mine is a nice size too and its my second ring..but if it were small it wouldnt mean I wsa loved any less..I think its a materialistic question! Sorry..its must my opinion!

I think it depends upon how you view the question. If you felt like you were being put on the spot, than it's fair to say it was an inappropriate time for your friend to ask such a question. Maybe she didn't realize you'd feel awkward and perhaps it just didn't occur to her that it can be taken as rude.
I have been asked about my ring several times, and I have been left with differing 'feelings' about the question each time - based upon who was doing the asking, and what the context was. My DH's cousin asked me the size of my ring over Instand Messenger, and I wasn't sure if she was being rude, or if she was genuinely interested and trying to get a visual of the ring, since she lived far away. I just ignored the question.

it depends on the tone.. if it was in a 'my ring is bigger than yours way' than its wrong... also, some people are just ignorant and the only thing they know about diamonds is there are carats involved. also, she could be old-fashioned nosy.

rude, rude, rude!! I think it's terrible to ask that question. My ring isn't small and I love it, but I would be offended if someone asked me -whether it be a friend or a total stranger.

Re: Is this tacky?
I knew nothing about my ring until I got it insured.. I just knew I loved it.. thats all that mattered..
I think someone in my office asked.. I believe I said something like 'I dunno, dont care.. it's not like I plan on selling it so who cares?'

Re: Is this tacky?
If people are there and looking at it, I don't know why they need to know the exact size of the stone. There is no good reason that I can think of besides that people are just nosey and it gives them somehting to gossip about. Isn't there anything else for them to concern themselves with?!

Re: Is this tacky?
I already posted..but I ll post again..who cares about he size of the stone..its the love that was put into that ring that makes it wonderfull..and why people care is beyond me. I know there are people out there withmuch nicer rings than me...but my fiance worked Nights to buy my ring,,he sacrificed alot ....so its not the sixe..its the love behind it. Anyone who ask the size is crazy..who cares!!!

Wow, I'm a little surprised by how many women automatically think that someone is being malicious when they ask about the carat/weight of your rings.

Re: Is this tacky?
I guess I thin k its a malicious question because who cares how big it is..I might ask a friend privately..but i wouldnt ask them in front of anyone...because to me its personal..I dont know ahy I think that way...I just do.

No, I totally agree w/ 'who cares?' It's nobody's business, really. I was just a little surprised by the responses, that's all.

Re: Is this tacky?
Unfortunately can see both sides of teh story..If someone I loved asked me..Id tell them and wouldnt think twice...unfortunaley for me..Ive had stupid people ask me where it was alsmost a competetion..and its silly!!I guess it depends on teh situation!!

I agree with 'it depends on the tone'. Chances are it was rude if it made you go hummm and ask this question. I like that response 'the perfect size for me' Sorry if she made you uncomfortable

Definitely depends on the tone. Some people are genuinely curious while other are just being competitive. I find that people in the NYC are pretty bold with questions while out in Long Island people are much more polite!

Re: Is this tacky?
I HATE IT!! I would NEVER ask someone that!!
Besides...it's not JUST the size that counts...besides the obvious reasons...love can't be sized...but the 4 C's are ALWAYS a factor.
I had a friend of mine that got a ROCK! but the stone was of such poor quaility...I felt like telling her it was crap everytime she put other peoples 'smaller' stones down!!
Just rude!!! That's not a question to be asked!!

Re: Is this tacky?
holy cow that is very rude to ask that.
hopefully no one will ask you again, but if it does, you can always say 'i don't know'. obviously you do but the person should get the hint.

Re: Is this tacky?
Yeah, I think it's tacky. But I also think it's rude to ask someone how much they make, how much they paid for their house or car - UNLESS it's a friend and they're in the market and are looking for ideas...but I think you can differentiate when it's someone being tacky and when it's not.
