Henri pushes heavy rains to Florida

STEINHATCHEE, Fla. (Sept. 5) - A wet and slow-moving Tropical Storm Henri pushed heavy rain into Florida's Gulf Coast Friday, threatening to fill rivers and streams already full after one of the wettest summers in recent years.

In Bermuda, meanwhile, businesses boarded up offices, and residents rushed to prepare as Hurricane Fabian picked up speed on its path toward the island. The storm, expected to pass near or over the island later Friday, could be one of Bermuda's worst in years, forecasters said.

At 11 a.m. EDT, Henri had maximum sustained winds near 45 mph - slightly above the 39 mph threshold to be a named storm. But for Florida, the storm was likely to be more of a problem as a rainmaker, with forecasters calling for up to a foot of rain in some areas.

Henri was centered about 80 miles southwest of Cedar Key and was moving toward the northeast at 8 mph. It was expected to turn more northerly later in the day, forecasters said.

A tropical storm warning was in effect for Florida's west coast from Englewood south of Sarasota north to the Aucilla River in the Panhandle, about 20 miles southeast of Tallahassee.

``Given the amount of rain that has taken place in the Tampa Bay area, particularly north of Tampa where the storm is going to hit, we're concerned,'' Gov. Jeb Bush said Friday. ``The biggest concern would be the potential for major, major rainfall on top of a very saturated area.''

``We're certainly not pleased about the weather,'' said Twis Hoang, spokeswoman for waterlogged Osceola County south of Orlando. ``It's going to make some lives uncomfortable, but we're prepared to deal with it the best we can.''

Forecasts call for 6 to 12 inches of rain with even more in isolated areas through Saturday.

The National Weather Service issued flood warnings for five central Florida counties, and a coastal storm surge was also expected. Moderate flooding already has been reported on the Withlacoochee River at Holder.

Thunderstorms on Florida's east coast were creating problems, as well. Up to 3 inches of rain fell on Orange, Osceola and Indian River counties during an hour-long span Thursday afternoon.

In Bermuda, forecasters urged residents to protect ``life and property'' as powerful Fabian, a Category 3 hurricane, headed toward the island chain Friday morning. Several cruise ships that were docked there left early, and others were changing routes to avoid the storm. All Friday flights into Bermuda were canceled.

At 11 a.m., Fabian was about 110 miles south-southwest of Bermuda, an island chain about 900 miles east of Charleston, S.C. The hurricane was moving north at 17 mph with sustained winds of about 120 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

When we went in June one of the rivers did overflow onto the roads. One of the main roads was washed out and had to be barracaded. Great, this is what I have to look forward too, their darn rainy season
