I was just talking to this woman I work with that I barely know...actually, I just met her a couple of days ago. She was complimenting my ring and asked to see it so I showed her my hand, then she asked me to take it off, so I did and she held it. Then she asked if she could try it on!!!! What?! I didn't know how to say no, so I let her but isn't that at least weird if not rude???? I would never do this myself and I've never heard of anyone doing it either, especially to a total stranger. She mentioned that she's thinking of getting engaged, she's ring shopping etc, but stil....

Ick! My FSIL did that to me. I had wanted to keep my ring on for the first entire 24 hours and she's like too bad, take it off. ICKKKKK.

Re: Isn't this kind of rude??
WOW that takes nerve! I dont think I would have ever asked someone WHO I DONT REALLY KNOW if I could try on their engagement ring! I have had a lot of my friends ask and they are always like 'You dont have to let me try it on if you dont want to' that I have no problem with! BUT A SOMEONE WHO IS BASICALLY A STRANGER?????? Thats just bizarre!

Re: Isn't this kind of rude??
I always tell people that it is bad luck for them ( if the are not already married /engaged ) to try on another person's e-ring. It always seems to work. I guess that they don't want to be doomed from ever getting engaged...

I wouldnt have taken it off. I would tell her I never take it off, or my fingers are swelled today I would never make someone take off their ring for me to try on

Re: Isn't this kind of rude??
its rude, my SIL told me that its bad luck when I got engaged and to never let anyone try it on if they aren't married so I tell everyone that. My MOH drives me crazy with that!

Re: Isn't this kind of rude??
I just remembered she said its bad luck because if they try on the ring they might take away all your happiness? something to that effect

Re: Isn't this kind of rude??
I take deedee's approach, I get all like 'DUH...don't you know it's bad luck to try on someone elses e-ring!' And that usually catches them by surprise and they don't want to anymore. I have NEVER asked someone to take off their e-ring to look, let alone ask to try it on...not even my closest friends.

Re: Isn't this kind of rude??
Well I have a similiar situation that kind of threw me for a loop.. When my FH proposed, after everything was said and done, he told me the story of how he bought the ring and yadda yadda.. He said the my FSIL tried on the ring.. Before I even got it on my finger!! now I know probably alot of people looked at it and tried it on, but after it was cleaned and in his possesion i think its rather weird someone had it on before i did.. I dunno maybe im just weird (or maybe he shouldnt have told me!!)

It's very rude, though, when you don't know the person. Some people have no shame. When I got engaged FH's grandmother told me to never let anyone try on my ring because it's bad luck.

It is. And if anyone ever asks to see it, it stays on my hand, I have never agreed to let anyone try my rings on. These things NEVER come off. It's never been on another finger and never will!!

Re: Isn't this kind of rude??
My bf who is my moh wore mine at work one night. I worked with her so I knew where it was. Like I said she is my best friend and I know she would have let me wear hers. I would not let a stranger try it on. I have never had any one ask....

Re: Isn't this kind of rude??
Everyone asked to try my ring on, some people asked to hold it and then just slipped it on their finger without asking. I too had someone at work whom I barely know ask if she could try it on. I let everyone try it, I don't believe it is bad luck and I know women get gaga over diamonds, especially big, beautiful ones! I agree that it seems rude to ask, but it was my experience that the people who asked had no clue it was rude and were just excited to see the ring and what it might look like on their finger, so it didn't bother me. If it bothered me, I would just flat out say NOWAY!! I don't like for others to try my ring on.

Doesn't bother me a bit, I actually take it as a compliment! It's a piece of jewelry, not my undies!
It's not rude, IMO, but if it bothers you, the 'bad luck' excuse probably works well.
