Also tinsel- they eat it and the sharp edges cut their insides.

My dog ate a poinsetta plant her first christmas. I was soo worried but the vet said she would have to ingest a really large one in order to have an affect. Of course this is not saying one should feed this plant to their animal, but looking back 10 years I now think its pretty funny! .
We dont give our dog really any people food, except steak bones. Dalmatians have a bad digestive system.

Raisins
Ferrets can eat raisins Our vet told us that the best part of being a ferret is to have raisins as treats

ahh...now that I look...the flyer says best friend...so maybe it is specific to dogs?

An old friends cat ate some tinsel and it went through their digestive system. They noticed when a piece of tinsel was hanging out of it's hiney (The cat was fine).

Re: Items to keep away from pets for holiday and all year
The first Christmas I had Angel 2001 (husband and I were barely on speaking terms and he was at his 'families' home), 'we' (the pets and I) were at home making a nice dinner. The dog/cat were wrestling around with something in the bedroom. I should have checked on what they were doing, but since they were always goofing around, I didn't think anything of it until I heard Angel SCREAMING in pain!!! I dropped everything and ran in to find out what was going on. On the floor next to the bed was an ornament hook. No ornament, no glass, just the hook. She was whelping in pain and wouldn't get up. I freaked out and called around to an Emergency Vet. There was one open on the service road of the expressway in Melville. I shut everything down and hustled there in about 20 minutes (mind you, I live in Patchogue). They examined her immediately and took her in the back (I wasn't allowed to be with her). While I sat there for hours, one by one families came in with their dogs/cats. One poor puppy had just been bought days earlier and dropped dead while the kids were playing with it. Another dog had been hit when someone carelessly left the front door open. It was horrible!! I called Bob at his brother's, and his brother answered. I asked for Bob and he was like 'Who?!? Who is this?!? Who are you looking for?!?' in a sarcastic tone. I was like 'Put Bob on the F&*)&^ phone!!'. He was like 'Oooooh, you want BOB! I couldn't hear you over all the fun we're having here!'. When he got on the phone I was in no mood and told him I was at the emergency vet with Angel and that I didn't know if she'd make it because they just began exploratory surgery to remove the ornament shards from inside of her. He went silent on the other end and told me he'd be there soon. FOUR HOURS LATER (they live in Holbrook) he shows up all 'concerned' for his 'baby' and tells me how his father was devastated when he heard the news. Yeah, um-hum, considering I've been sitting here all alone for over five hours, eating whatever was available in the vending machine. Nearly six hours later and almost $1200 in fees, we were out of there. Of course his lovely mother called when we got home and wanted to speak to him directly because she didn't believe that Angel was in any danger and that I had made up the whole episode to RUIN THEIR HOLIDAY!!! Meanwhile the pup is in the background, still crying in pain.
The point to my rant is be VERY, VERY careful with pets around decorations. The pretty interesting new 'toys' they think they've discovered can kill them.

Oh my gosh! I have a new kitten and I decorated my tree last night with ornaments. He is home by himself and now I'm worried. I put the ornaments high on the tree and left the bottom bare but I forget how inquisitive pets can be.
Here I was complaining to hubby that the kitten was ruining my Christmas tree (he was swatting it all night) and now I feel like a jerk after reading Shamee's post. Yikes!

Erica - grapes are poisonous to dogs, just like chocolate. One of my dogs loves grapes, the other hates them, but now we won't give them any, since they are bad for them.
And some dogs are more susceptible to reactions. My friends mini schnauzer dog ate a 5lb hershery bar, and was fine, and another friends lab ate a 4 pack of chocolate muffins, and was really sick, so it depends on the the dog.

Erica - give Elvis Carrots, my dog love them, and we use them as treats, since they get too many a day.
Molly won't eat grape tomatoes, becasue they are round, and she won't eat grapes, even if we broke them open. She is a character.

Re: Items to keep away from pets for holiday and all year
My little Bichon got into a bag of choclolate chips on Thanksgiving day. When I caught her I called the emergency vet in riverhead and he told me to monitor her, because any change in behavior could mean the chocolate was toxic and she had to be rushed in. SHe vomited everywhere but then she was OK. She gave us a scare though. It taught me to be very careful where things are left.

unfortunately I go through this pretty often when Elvis licks somewhere that my hair has fallen out of....like the couch or the carpet (yes he licks all of these places)
but then he will have the hair in his butt...and the poopie won't drop off and he runs around in a squatted position...its actually hysterical, but you have to run after him with a papertowel and wipe his bum!!!

My cat ate a christmas bulb (dumb thing). I was scooping glass out of his mouth and throat with my finger.
I had to call the emergency vet too, but all turned out ok.
We no longer put anything breakable on the tree, all our nice ornaments stay in the box.
I often come home and find one of them sitting inside the tree, or find the branches flattened.
