I don't have any places...but be careful and do your research. I know several people who adopted beautiful dogs, who ended up having health/mental problems.

Good luck!!!

EXCITING!!!!!!

Do you know what size/type of dog you're looking for? If you're in an apartment, you might want to consider a smaller, less active dog --

Do you want to adopt or go through a breeder?

(I have PUPPY fever as opposed to baby fever)

eta - how could you get my hopes up like that?

1. Need a smaller one as my mom is terribly afraid! However, we have an apartment with a yard!

2. Adopt

3. Puppy Fever

that is awesome! I love that you are going to adopt! More people should.

There are a few places on LI that I know about.

Also there are breed specific rescue organizations on the internet. Do you know what type of breed you want? Do you care?

DH and I also want a dog (and his daughter REALLY wants one).

My vote is for a Golden Retriever, but I know he also likes German Shepards.

i dont mean to bust a bubble cause i am genuniely happy for you and your decision, but i want to point out some things i didnt realize before we got our dog.

i ADORE my dog - he is really my best friend - but it can be so much work and very frustrating @ times.

cheech is a complete brat - he has a strong personality. he is not 'bad' he is just a b!tch and has identity crisis. i swear my dog thinks he is a person.
he is sometimes worse than a child because he cannot speak and i dont always know whats wrong, or what he wants.

we cant go away for a weekend w/o making arrangements for a sitter, etc.

i only say all these things because i genuinely love animals - and i think that sadly this is often why there are so many homeless pets - because people bring home a cute little puppy and the next thing you know they are a handful and it becomes too much.

honestly - my advice is to go to and get an adult dog that is not too old. they will already be housebroken and the tough stuff will be out of the way. also - if your not into pedgirees there are so many great pets available @ the pound.

hope your heart and home is big enough. my next dog will not be a puppy - it will be a dog that just needs love and a home.
good luck

Small dogs are perfect Chris! Go to North Shore and adopt a small mutt! They are the best, the cheapest to care for and so loving! Make sure you get to see the entire history of the dog, why it was put in a shelter to begin with and by whom. You dont want to adopt a dog with a violent history or an abused dog...how exciting congrats!!
