Its Official: The Name Change process has begun

Original post by MJDoc12

Went to the DMV yesterday to change my name on my license, title, and registration. It feels weird losing my last name. I kind of feel a little sad about it, does anyone else feel or think they will feel this way? I know I could've hyphenated it and stuff, but DH is rather traditional in that aspect, and really insisted on the name change. (Poor guy doesn't ask for much, except this one time!) I know in the long run, I will get used to it, but right now, I'm not about it.

I spent the first 27 years of my life as one name and now I have to change everything!!!

I can understand why you feel that way...but me? I can't wait! Can't wait to get rid of this last name so it will no longer be mispronounced and I will never be called terra cotta again!!!

Although my new last name is alot longer- my students will hate it at first. AND I will certainly have to deal with misspellings - people always want to add a letter because it's not the common version of the name that everyone knows. Oh well, at least it SOUNDS better than my last name. WOOHOO!!

I am coming up on 1 yr and still haven't changed it. So yes, I am having letting go issues.

I'm going through the EXACT SAME THING AS YOU. I still have not gone to officially change it b/c I just don't want to.
i love my husband, but I feel that my name is part of my identity; I don't want to change it!
Hyphenating is great, but I can't b/c the names are so long, and my initials would be A-S-S.
(not good)

On the other hand.....its just a name. A name is a name is a name. It doesn't really define you in any way. And if DH wants it........you don't want to hurt his feelings and not take his name.

Don't feel bad though....I have friends who got married years ago and still have not made it to the SS department to formally change it. Or, other friends who waited until they had kids before changing. What you are feeling is normal and I can relate.

Do you mean you changed it on your marriage license but you haven't changed it on all your documentation? So I guess there's no time limit to get it done? Can you just NOT do it? lol

that's correct. When you take the name on the marraige license, you are just taking 'the right' to use it.
When you change it on your SS card, you are officially changing it.
If you take the name on your marraige license, you can officially change it (at DMV, SS office) whenever you'd like....or never for that matter.

I definitely know how you feel! I'm so proud of where I come from and of my family...losing my last name feels sad sometimes!

I understand! I felt a little lost, and a little in between for a while. Also, I am a teacher, and hearing the kids say 'Mrs. F' was bizarre! Another crazy first, seeing my new name in print in the school newsletter for the first time! I felt a little sappy too, and friends told me that time would help, and it really did. Congratulations!

Next week I think I will just have to get over it and get it all done.

Did the DMV need an original copy of your marriage license??

for me it wasn't so much how i felt about my name change but that i have double what civilian people do. We have our regular things, social, bills, insurance, drivers...but on top of that, i have all my name stuff for the military. New name tapes (not cheap), email address, basically all my stuff dealing with the military. Very overwhelming!

I never thought I would be ok with changing my name (losing a piece of myself and my cultural background)-- but with FH I feel alright with it --especially when I think of having the same name as my children and making our own family.

yea....I took his name on the marraige license......which gives me the right to the name....but I'm not changing it any time soon. Its very common to keep your last name; with rights to your DH name.
That's what I'm doing!
I know that we'll have kids some day (we hope) and when we do, I think I'll be ready to change my name. If its good enough for them, its got to be good enough for me!
I've already gotten a taste of how annoying it is to have 2 last names.....its confusing to people. However, it doesn't bother me that much. When I have kids, or whenever I'm ready......I'll change my name. Until then, I'm still married, and all those who are important know it.

Nope, no time limits. I did have it changed on the marriage certificate, but haven't changed it on SS, my driver's license, or at work. Every once in awhile DH makes a comment, but he is fine with it. People call me Mrs. HisLastName, and I am fine with that, but still haven't made the 'official' change.
