Japanese Hair Straightening

Japanese Hair Straightening

I'm REALLY considering doing this once and for all. My hair is in between wavy and curly but is SO frizzy and unruly. I can't wash and go EVER. I either have to glob on gel to get the curls to hold and look good....or I have to use a brush and with gel comb it back into a ponytail. The hair on my head is so frizzy that if I didn't put get in it and tie it back, I'd look like a mess!!!!

ETA: I also dye my hair and have no choice but to keep it up due to grays......just thought you should know that too.

I know it's been done before, but can you girls give me the pros and cons of this treatment and share your personal experiences with me? TIA

My cousin has kinky hair and did it (she is in my BM bonding pics, the little cute one with stick straight hair.) But I have heard you shouldn't if you process your hair.

Personally, I have done it 2x and each time I was sooooo happy with it! I really feel like for some of us it is a GODSEND! Worth every penny and every minute of it too.

I would love to do it again (like yesterday haha) but I am afraid that when it comes time to have my hair done for the wedding it would make things difficult. I only say this because when i've had it done it wouldnt hold a curl at all, no matter what I did to it, and eventhough I dont plan on using curls for the wedding I am still afraid that it would make it very difficult to style because you cant really mold it so to speak.

BUT i can promise you that it will be the first thing i do when i am back from my honeymoon

It is very hard to curl Japanese straightened hair with a curling iron! I worked in a hair salon for 10 years and although I didnt do updo's, I remember the girls having a very hard time!

One of my friends just got the Keratin hair straightening done last week. i dont know much about it except that she told me that it fades out of your hair...like a semi permanent treatment I guess. I can find out what she thinks of it if you want me too.

ETA: she has kinky curly hair!

Re: Japanese Hair Straightening

I did it a few years ago when it first became popular. I have very strange hair. It's curly/wavy but very, very fine and I have a TON of it. It gets frizzy so quickly. So I got it done (it took 9 hours) and I really liked it. I still had to blow out my hair but it took 30 minutes instead of 2 hours.

The only con I experienced (besides how long it took) was that I had some hair loss/breakage. Nothing that anyone else would notice but I knew it was there. Also, growing it out was really difficult for me. I couldn't afford to get it again but my hair was a mess.

Also, after having it done. NOTHING could make my hair curl. And I'm talking over a year after it was done it would not curly. Any curl put in my hair no matter how much product was used would fall out 10 minutes later.

My friend has curly hair (its not kinky) and she has ALOT of hair and she did this ... the permanent one not the one that goes away in 3 months, it took like 8 hours but her hair is pin straight all the time, even when she washes it... it worked for her, so I would give it a try if I were you

I pretty much had the same experience as PeachyKeen. I LOVE the Japanese straightening, but you really can't do much with it as far as styling...curls, etc. I can, however, give it a lot of body and life with curling my flat iron under when I run it through.

I have been doing the Keratin treatment...but be careful with which one you get. There is a Brazilian STRAIGHTNER and a Brazilian KERATIN treatment. The Keratin is a semi-permanent deal...it does wash out over time, and they suggest using sodium-free shampoo to make it last longer. Personally, I dont' like the condition after I get it done...it's super soft, but the shine is just not there.

My stylist won't let me do the Japanese til AFTER my wedding!!!

Re: Japanese Hair Straightening

Personally, I would not recommend doing it! I did it a few years ago when it was very popular, and my hair was silky straight for about a week...afterwards, it showed signs of serious damage. I feel like it fried my hair, and it certainly did not stay silky pin straight for long! I have naturally curly (often frizzy) hair, and it really only ended up making it worse b/c it was so damaged!

My sister does hair and she always talks people out of doing this. She said it is really damaging to the hair. I would also say that if you really want to do it you should wait until after your wedding because when they try to curl your hair it will not hold. I have seen people who have had it done and look great and some look horrid. I was thinking of doing this for a while but I chickened out...I'm too scared that I would be on the side that turns out bad.

Forgot to mention the color aspect.

I know for a fact that if you highlight or go lighter, they will not even do the process. If it's a darker shade, it might be a different story. You also cannot do both processes within a certain amount of time of each other.

When I got this done, if I just blow dryed my hair, it looked terrible...very dry and pin straight. I did have to still use the flat iron (2' ceramic) to get it to look awesome. I think people go into it thinking it's going to be a miracle...I truly believe it is, but you still need to put some time and elbow grease into it.

I can't wait to do it again!!

Re: Japanese Hair Straightening

I've been getting this done well over 4 years now... I get it done once a year...and have awesome hair for that year LOL> I have naturally very frizzy wavey puffy hair LOL...b/c it's soo thick. But the Jap. Straightening does the deed to me. It's true it doesn't hold a curl as long, so if you'r thinking of having curls on your wedding, I would wait to get back from your HM to do it.
I'll be chopping my hair off so it'll be awhile before I get it again...
