I have a hair and makeup trial tomorrow... what do you tip for a trial? Thanks in advance!

Re: Jenn the Hair Genie/Oksana Question
No tips as I understand it, because they're independent, so they keep all the money you pay them, minus their travel and supplies expenses. You go to them for the trial, so it's just what they use on you, which I'm assuming is more than covered in the price you pay.
I am using them too, and I wasn't going to tip for my trials! Also, don't forget, they're doing your wedding, and you may be inclined to throw a little extra in after they do the big day if you're happy with the results, but even then, it's not necessary and up to you . . . . I wouldn't think it's expected if you're not using salon staff.

Re: Jenn the Hair Genie/Oksana Question
I didn't tip Oksana because it's her own business. I didn't use Jenn.

you should always tip no matter what the circumstance they are doing a service. regardless in or out of a salon. its just simple etiquette!

My sister owns a salon and told me never to tip the salon owner. If your feeling good about giving more money, I don't see why not.

Not really. Tips are for employees who only earn a fraction of what they should because they work for someone else, like waiters, hairdressers, etc. Nowadays, and my friend owns a salon, even salon workers might rent their chair and keep every penny but their rent, which they as business owners work into their fees. Etiquette does not dictate that everyone gets a tip. Tips are to make up for someone paid a low salary for high-quality service at a place (hotel, restaurant, salon) that takes all if not most of every other dime you spend there, even though that person provides your services.

its true, my mom has owned salons and as the owner she ALWAYS received a tip, she never had clients that didn't tip her.
I tip as well at a salon whether or not its the owner, even if its just to show that i like the work they did

Re: Jenn the Hair Genie/Oksana Question
Guess my 35 years of sense are useless, both in NYC and DC salons, and more LI Weddings than I can count.
Remember, my suggestion was if you ARE NOT IN A SALON. We are talking about independent vendors who do not work in or own salons, but do events.
Tip away ladies, it's a nice gesture, but the question was whether you should in these particular circumstances, and it is not customary based on the original question.

most stylists will get 60% of their earnings so its not that bad and some will be able to negotiate for more. Also as the owner you dont necessarily make ALOT of money, many times you will have your employees making more money than you. As the owner of a salon you have to pay for the rent, which nowadays can be insane. YOu have to purchase all the supplies and for a salon it is often and alot of it. Pay for advertising, then you also do have to pay for reception usually theres more than 1 so you pay their salary. So a decent amount of what an owner earns goes back into the business. Along with rent theres the electric bill, telephone bill, and other expenses.
now for non-salon stylists they dont have rent for a salon or as large orders of supplies but being a bridal stylists you do work mostly weekends so you work less days except when you do trials plus you mostly do 1 person a day, so they have less coming in than a salon owner does.
In the end do whatever you're comfortable with I guess

Re: Jenn the Hair Genie/Oksana Question
On the floor working, as the owner of the salon she gets tips, but its not expected she said because she is the owner, and if she wanted more money she would charge more.
I have nothing against tips, Its just not logical for owners to expect them when they are the ones who set price.

actually nobody answered her question now that i look at what she asked lol, were all talking about owners and non-owners and none of us answered her question lol
to the OP: if you are planning on tipping, usually about 15-20%

She asked about Oksana and Jenn, who I have booked, and they are independent vendors. That's what I responded to.

lol thank you
I guess it is personal preference. There are rules that say you do not need to tip the owner, but not that you can't. Since they are wedding stylists, you will see them more than once so you can always just tip the day of i guess.
Everyone should do whatever they feel comfortable doing. I answered as to what I personally do. I don't know i just feel weird if i dont tip, like will this person think i didnt like the work they did lol. I know its a stupid way to think but i cant help it.

yes i know, i was joking about the fact that nobody answered her question. She asked how much do you tip for trials, there are answers that you dont have to tip the owner so she can go that route but if she decides she wants to were all busy about one point and didnt answer that one question.
