Jewish Brides...

Original post by Soon2BeMrsS

Ok, know I sais this before, FH is Jewish, I will convert after the wedding (inccorporating traditions from both faiths in ceremony)\

We want to choose what traditions we want to have so in lieu of asking FILsI'm asking for your help:

What traditions are you favorite for a wedding:

What do you suggest we choose:

Also is it true that traditionally Jewish wedding bands have to be all gold?

Are you getting diamond wedding bands?

I wanted to have a diamond tiffany band, but I want to wear the ring we're married with all the time, I may get a plain Tiffany platnim? Who knows, I want the ring I wear to be from that day

Even though I will be catholic that day.....

ask the rabbi if he or she is ok w/ u wearing a band w/ diamonds on it. not all are sticklers for having plain wedding bands in the ceremony...

I have two bands. My plain band cost all of $30. Really I wouldn't get too upset over it.

Besides, now I have a second band to switch into when I know I'll be working with my hands.

It is funny you should say that you want a diamond band. I REALLY wanted one too, but I got a platinum band and really could not be happier. I never take my band off and for me the plain one is much easier to live with on a daily basis. I love my e-ring and it is a enough bling for me. Perhaps in a few years as an anniversary present you and I both could get the diamond eternity band.

Right now we are spending $ on our new home. I am actually happier that I will have a fantastic leather couch and leather loung chair, with a 37 inch Sharp aquios LCD than the diamond band. For me. once we got married I think my priorities changed. It is much more about what is good for us and creating a family. I will get the band eventually, but now I am completely content with what I have.

Good luck.

Traditions for your wedding ceremony:
Chuppah and Glass Breaking are two big ones.
Definitely ones you shouldn't skip.

I see that you said you're converting but not until after the wedding. If you really do want a mix of traditions, I would not do the chuppah. That is the mark of a Jewish ceremony, not a mixture of both.

We too had an interfaith ceremony. We had a trellis, not a chuppah, for the reason I stated above. We did the glass breaking and also the blessing(s) over the wine. I was raised Catholic so for my traditions, we had 2 readings (1 secular, 1 from the Old Testament, neither mentioning God or Jesus) and the unity candle.

I still have the ceremony at home if you're interested. We got a ton of compliments on how well we incorporated traditions from both religions without pushing one over the other.

I find that ironic considering the high number of non-Jewish and non-interfaith brides I've seen on LIW who want Chuppahs at their weddings.

A chuppah represents the home that the bride and groom are going to build together. I do not see how that would be offensive to christian sensibilities.

I think it's different if you're having a fully non-Jewish or non-interfaith wedding. Then, quite obviously, it's not a Jewish 'thing.' However, when you are trying to balance out faiths and traditions, a chuppah is a big indicator that the wedding is more Jewish than not.

I just went through this and was trying to provide the bride with my family's, and my DH's family's, reference. And, as I said, we got quite a number of compliments on the balance of the ceremony. It becomes very tricky when you're trying to keep both faiths happy in an inter-faith ceremony.

thanks I didn't know that

Eileen is right. The only thing a Jewish wedding really needs is a Chuppah. As far as the ring goes, it has to be PROPERTY of the groom given to the bride so borrowing isnt really an option. You could say 'buy' the ring for a nominal fee of maybe 1 cent which is basically what we did from my mother. We are using her band but since it isnt FH's property, he 'bought' it from her.

will your mom buy the ring back?

No she will not. The ring will then be mine. She can't wear it. Its too small for her. She wants me to have it anyway. It has the inscription from my parents wedding in 1956. I am getting married in the year of what would have been my parents 50th wedding anniversary.

We all choose to interpret particular customs differently.

I 'm not Jewish FH is & I really want the Chuppla.... Is it wrong to use it for an interfaith marriage? I'm converting once we're married

We used a chuppah. I'm Jewish and DH isn't. He has no plans of converting. I don't see any problem in using a chuppah in an interfaith ceremony.

Absolutely not wrong at all. I know many brides of many cultures who like a chuppah or some type of canopy or covering. The symbolism of creating a home with your spouse spans all faiths - not just Judaism. Its just that Jewish weddings, where both the bride and groom are Jewish. MUST have one.
