Jewish Brides...

Ok, know I sais this before, FH is Jewish, I will convert after the wedding (inccorporating traditions from both faiths in ceremony)\

We want to choose what traditions we want to have so in lieu of asking FILsI'm asking for your help:

What traditions are you favorite for a wedding:

What do you suggest we choose:

Also is it true that traditionally Jewish wedding bands have to be all gold?

Are you getting diamond wedding bands?

Traditionally, you are supposed to get married in a plain band (don't know if it has to be gold or not), but it is not supposed to be unbroken (no diamonds or other stones in it).

I am getting married in a plain white gold band, but will be putting on my diamond wedding band after the ceremony!

Traditions for your wedding ceremony:
Chuppah and Glass Breaking are two big ones.
Definitely ones you shouldn't skip.
Oh, and for your processional, I personally prefer the Jewish processional. Specifically that everyone gets to walk down the aisle - grandparents even! And then the bride and groom are each escorted by both of their parents. I think this is a beautiful custom, and a wonderful way to honor your parents.

Also, you may want to get a ketubah. Not sure if you'd prefer an Interfaith one or a more traditional text, but that's for each couple to decide.

As to the question about the bands, some rabbis require that the ring exchanged in the ceremony be solid metal, no cuts or nicks. The idea is that it must be of 'determinable value'. Diamonds and other gem stones are easily faked, so they are a no go in this tradition. What many brides end up doing is buying an inexpensive plain band (it can be gold, white gold, silver, whatever) to use durin g the ceremony, and then get another ring to wear otherwise. I personally bought a $30 white gold band from QVC for the ceremony and I wear a band with sapphires and diamonds in it.

Your rabbi may allow you to use diamond band in the ceremony, it really is up to him.

I got married in a plain band then got a diamond one later. You can also borrow someones plain band to use at the ceremony.

As for traditions, stepping on the glass is a big one!

I am Jewish my fiance is catholic. We are having an interfaith ceremony. With customs from both sides. Both our parents will be walking us down, breaking of the glass unity candle ceremony, chupah, reading of the 7 marriage blessings.

It's only required that the bride wear a plain gold band (no markings, not even on this inside where it says 14k or 18k, or 24k etc). We had to have it smoothed out by the jeweler. My rabbi who's marrying us (a very orthodox rabbi) said it doesn't matter what kind of ring I give to FH.

What is the Chupplah, & 7 blessings?

Re: Jewish Brides...

the chuppah is the canopy that a jewish couple gets married under.
the 7 blessings are the sheva b'rachot. they are part of the nisu'in (nuptuals) section of a jewish wedding service. the wedding benedictions are actually 6 in number, but since these blessings are recited over a 2nd cup of wine, they begin with the blessing over the wine (to make 7 blessings).
their content links the marital union to the great themes of Jewish faith and destiny: the creation of the world and of humankind, the hoped-for restoration of Zion and Jerusalem, the prayer for joy and hapiness in marriange.

A Chuppah is a four-poster canopy that the bride, groom, officiant, and parents stand under during the ceremony. It symbolizes the home that you and FH will build together. In order for a Jewish Marriage to be official, there MUST be a Chuppah. Do a search, some are quite elaborate and others more subdued, but they are very beautiful.

The Seven Blessings are the traditional blessings said at a wedding. Here's a website that lists the hebrew and english .

ETD: Rather fitting that you and I should answer at the same time, eh Marnie?

Re: Jewish Brides...

I would like to know if the 7 marriage blessings can be read by someone who is NOT the officiating Rabbi/Cantor and if that person HAS to be married. I read SOMEWHERE that that person has to be married if they arent the officiant. I am looking for ways to include FH's family in our ceremony. I thought this might be a good way.

I've even heard that having people read the 7 blessings is a good way to inlcude people (jewish and non jewish) in the ceremony. We were thinking of having jewish family members read them in hebrew and non jewish family members read them in english.

if u want to get creative, and if it's ok w/ your rabbi, u can write your own interpretations of the sheva b'rachot for people to read.

Yes, they can be read by someone, and they do not have to be married. We have split up the 7 blessings, my side is getting 4 and FH side is getting 3. It just so happens all the people we wanted to give the honor to are married, but they don't have to be.
