Jewish Brides

Ok so the Ketubah.....
1st - I hear a rumor that a family member is NOT allowed to sign.. is this true? I hope not bc FH and I were really wanting our Grandmothers to sign.
2nd- How were you able to display your Ketubah at the wedding, did you frame it?? But then how did ou sing it??

Re: Jewish Brides

You're supposed to have it signed by a non-family member who is male ... one guy who you know, one who your FH knows ... BUT you should check with your rabbi because he/she might not care. My uncle (by marriage) signed mine.

As for displaying it, i had it framed at Michael's and asked them not to insert the glass yet (so it was just a frame & mat) ... it took about a week or two. Then, after the wedding, i took it back to them to have the glass inserted. If you go, make sure you get a coupon (they often have 55% off for framing ... but it's still not THAT cheap)

Re: Jewish Brides

I'm sorry to say but I looked into this and an immediate family member is not supposed to sign the ketubah. We had an interfaith one so we had my 2 cousins sign it, still not immediate family though. My cousin is a little more tradiationally and she informed me that her rabbi would only allow non-family members who are extremely religious sign her ketubah.

As for displaying it, we didn't display ours at the wedding. It was too much to worry about making sure we had at the end of the night, so I handed it to my bridal attendant and she put it away. BUT ours was not on flimsy paper, so if we wanted to, it would have stood easily on an easel.

Re: Jewish Brides

It really depends on what you want.

The official witnessed to your wedding are supposed to be observant Jewish males who are not related to either of you, nor to each other.

We're interfaith, and not Orthodox so this isn't as important to us. You could also have the 2 jewish non-related males wintess the ceremony and have the grandmas sign the ketubah OR have the witnesses sign the ketubah AND have your granmothers sign below them as additional witnesses. I don't think there's any prohibition on additional witnesses.

Re: Jewish Brides

you should speak to your rabbi
Our rabbi is reform and said we can have a family member sign it and they can be male or female - however they must be jewish

To display it, you should use an easel. You can not frame it because you need to have it open to sign before the ceremony

Re: Jewish Brides

if you want to display it you can always get a cheap frame at michaels or wherever to put it in for during the wedding.

Re: Jewish Brides

make sure you get the ketubah CORNER MOUNTED not dry mounted. You can have them corner mount it on foam board for the wedding.

Re: Jewish Brides

This is our ketubah.... they can range from 20 to 600. I'd say most of the ones we looked at were about 200-300. That doesn't include the writing, which is always extra.

I went to Yussel's in Merrick - they're very helpful.
