Jewish Brides--Auf Ruf was today

Jewish Brides--Auf Ruf was today

It was great. The service was very long but no one minded at all, except my poor sister, who had an asthma attack. We invited many friends, some Jewish and some not. Everyone got something out of it. Our Jewish friends brought their kids, and for them to see FH and I at the Torah was really neat. Our non-Jewish friends all commented about what they learned and asked some questions after the service. We had bagels and lox after the service. I especially enjoyed seeing the kids from the Junior Congregation leading us in songs. Plus, it was nice to know that the Auf Ruf is really a time for the groom to shine.

I highly recommend having a big Auf Ruf with lots of friends and family asked to join you! We did this instead of a rehearsal dinner.

Here is how I explained Auf Ruf to our friends when I sent out an e-vite:

An Auf Ruf is a Jewish ceremony that takes place about a week before a wedding. The groom is called up to the Torah during Saturday morning services. The members of the congregation ask for G-d's blessing for the marriage and the congregation welcomes the new couple.

Anyway: Please keep my sister in your thoughts. She has only had 2-3 asthma attacks ever before this week, and now she has had 3 more in just a few days. She wants to feel better for my wedding.

i'm so happy for you kerie!

fyi: in more liberal synagogues BOTH the bride and groom are called up for the auf ruf...

I know! I got to stand up by the Torah but not do a reading

The Rabbi had a good explanation for me. At the wedding, more people fuss over the bride, but at the Auf Ruf, the groom gets more attention. I usually prefer the more reform ways, but today I just accepted the service for what it was.

Oh, my nephew had never been to services before and apparently he asked my sister if G-d comes out when they open the Ark!

yes, sometimes you just have to abide by 'minhag hamakom' -- the custom of the place you are at.

your nephew sounds too cute!!

Ahh, it's nice to know someone else from LIW had theirs today also.

I was also proud because my dad is a Levi and was first called to the Torah (it goes in order of your tribe, Kohen, Levi, then Israelite). There was no Kohen there today. I'm not sure if I am explaining the tribe thing correctly, so forgive me.

A friend of ours had their Auf Ruf yesterday too!

How much did your FH have to read? I'm not sure my FH is good at it either and his family belongs to a Orthodox temple so I know in advance that's all him.
