Jewish Brides-- Ketubah Calligrapher?

Original post by randella

I need my ketubah filled out by a calligrapher that can read Hebrew-- anyone know of someone?

My calligrapher gave me the name of a company that turned out to be a dead end and now I feel like am on a wild goose chase looking for someone.

Thanks!

You don't need a challah cover...they'll cover it with a napkin at the reception. I was just talking in general.

Goldi, a shabbos GTG would be a lot of fun! I'm not shomer shabbos, but many of my friends are...we had a great shabbat/new year's party at our apartment.

I wish my place were big enough - Id love to do one! To be honest, I am not religious at all. Though I did meet FH on Jdate (and in college 15 and a half years before - long story -ill tell you some time).

As we contemplate our future and how we want to keep our home, he requested a 'Kosher Style' home. According to him this means : so shellfish, pork or milk and meat together. So i said that if this is what he wants, it is fine. But if we are to have a Jewish home, then we will have Shabbos dinner each Shabbos. I didnt do that growing up but we always had dinner together. I don't consider it a sacrifice.

Have you gotten your invites yet? Most invite places will be able to give you the name of a good calligrapher. I got my invites at Noteworthy in Woodbury, and the calligrapher they recommended was fabulous. Perhaps she does Ketubah's too?

I got my Ketubah from www.jessyjudaica.com and love it.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I always wanted a beautiful Ketubah. I think there is a Zion Lion in New Hyde Park as well. I know they have gorgeous things. I wonder if they have a registry. Id love to pick my own mezuzah and seder plate as well. The department stores have a few but nothing that I particularly care for.

I'm getting my mezuzah at Zion Lion also...basically you buy a glass in one of a number of colors (I think $20?), then you use that glass to break at the ceremony. Then you bring the glass back in the bag that it comes in, they ship it out somewhere that makes it into smaller pieces, and then you buy one of their clear glass (or crystal) mezuzas. (Some are very simple and less $, obviously the more detailed you get the more $ they are). They put the colored glass inside of the mezuza. I think it's a very cool thing. The only downside is that you won't get that 'pop' sound that there is when you step on a lightbulb.

I love that idea. There are companies that will suspend your broken glass or light bulb in a cube of resin and engrave something on the front.

We got a gift certificate for one of the break glass mezuzahs as a wedding present, but AFTER the ceremony...I was upset b/c we wouldn't be able to use it..I hadn't saved the glass.

The next thing we knew, my dad's cousin sent us a beautiful photo album with all the photos from our wedding, and box, with our broken glass wrapped in a napkin! I was so happy, and the mezzuzah is now hanging on our bedroom door

That's so nice that you're going to have Shabbos dinner each week - I tried doing that at the beginning, but I kind of stopped. On the Fridays that we're home though, I always make a nice meat dinner. I'm hoping that when we have kids one day, we have regular Shabbos dinner.

Our house is Kosher, for the most part...separate everything, Kosher meat, etc...we both grew up that way, so we're used to it.

I think that as we become older, we try to become more observant. It is important to me to have a Jewish home. I was pretty much self-taught as my family didnt do much more than Chanukah, Pesach and the High Holidays. I asked to go to hebrew school so I could have a party but I am glad I did. I have a much stronger connection to my faith as a result.
