Please enlighten me here, do they give you the shower after the baby is born??? do they give gifts etc?? Can others who are none Jewish, friends and family give you a shower?? I know we did for a lady here at the job, but I don't think the lady who organized it, knew anything about no showers for Jewish preggo ladies.
I think it is something mommies look forward to, I think it is a nice way to welcome the baby in to the world and help the new parents out.

Re: JEWISH PREGGOS or MOMS, Shower Question???
Shamma- some are superstitious that it is 'bad luck' to have one before the baby is born b/c you shouldnt keep 'baby stuff' in the house till the baby is born before I got pregnant my mom kept telling me NO shower unless its after you gave birth but now she is all excited and may do one after all................. the other day I told her I would be disappointed if I didnt have one and she even mentioned some places where it could be so she is coming around but there are people that are against it and I have heard of people throwing someone a shower after the birth.... kinda like a welcome to the world party for the baby but I do think its better to get the stuff and more helpful to get it before
ETA: they do give gifts but after the baby is born

Re: JEWISH PREGGOS or MOMS, Shower Question???
Tammy that would make sense to give gifts after. But I want a shower and the whole nine yards. I know when I go to showers to mommies love it, the doting over them, the rubbing of the bellies etc.
The gifts definitely goes a long way as well. Hey as long as you get somethings I still think its a nice gesture

I acutally have friends whose families still believe in this tradition... and enforce it on their daughters. My friends have had showers with work and waited until after the bambino is born to get all the gifts from family members. BTW- they were Italian.

I guess since I am not superstitious I cannot relate. I love a shower, I guess I just love to celebrate What a nicer thing to celebrate a baby coming in to the world. I just wanted to get what was behind it.

Re: JEWISH PREGGOS or MOMS, Shower Question???
My MIL is 100% Italian and had this for her own shower, but I don't want to have to wait with mine, nor do I believe in any of that!
Luckily she hasn't even questioned it.

See that is what I was also concerned about, if you wait until after the baby, wouldn't it seem overwhelming with a new baby to wash all the clothes, set up the nursery etc??? I know a lot of women like to have the big things out of the way before baby comes.
Thanks for answering
Lisa you are a woman after my own heart.

Re: JEWISH PREGGOS or MOMS, Shower Question???
The girl who works for me is Jewish and she's due next week. We had a shower for her but we purposely called it a 'party.' There was no mention of 'baby shower' on the cake or any of the decor. We'll send her the gift after the baby is born.
She seems pretty conservative, though. All baby items get stored at her brother's. The room will get set up while she is in the hospital.

Re: JEWISH PREGGOS or MOMS, Shower Question???
Jenn, I know how I am I would want it all done, b/c who is to say how busy I am going to be with a newborn to be setting up nursery. I guess its their beliefs and their superstitions and they are entitled. I know this is one time I would have to overlook it.

I completely see your point. My friend is freaking out. Her DH is extremely mechanically declined and she's afraid he won't get the furniture together in the 2 and ½ days he'll have.

Re: JEWISH PREGGOS or MOMS, Shower Question???
I'm Jewish, and I had a shower. A lot of religious women will absolutely NOT have a baby shower until after the baby is born, but I didn't want to wait to set things up, and I CERTAINLY didn't want everyone ELSE setting up the baby's room while I was in the hospital. I wanted everything washed and ready to go the moment I brought my little one home! I don't regret that. I do understand the superstition, but I disagree with it. For those women, a lot of times they might still have the shower, but store the gifts at a relatives' house or something. It depends on the mommy-to-be...

Re: JEWISH PREGGOS or MOMS, Shower Question???
My mom doesn't believe in showers - she is Irish so I don't know if it's a cultural thing or just a generational thing.
She thinks it is bad luck.

Re: JEWISH PREGGOS or MOMS, Shower Question???
My family is Italian and they dont believe in baby showers. My Mom though said that since my Gma has passed away, that I will have a baby shower, my GMa would have had a fit if she was still alive and I had a shower

Re: JEWISH PREGGOS or MOMS, Shower Question???
Religious Jews usually do not have showers, but they often receive gifts at a bris if it is a boy or a Hebrew naming party if it is a girl. My aunt just had a bris and recieved gifts at this time. I am not a religious Jew, very much believe in showers, and can't wait to have one!

Re: JEWISH PREGGOS or MOMS, Shower Question???
My DH is not that religious (he's Jewish), but he is adamant about not having any baby showers or buying anything for the baby until after the baby is born. I know that when my MIL was pregnant with DH, she ordered the furniture but put it on layaway until after he was born. I find this interesting because DH does not go to temple nor does he keep kosher during Passover. Yet, he feels that it's against his religion to have a baby shower before the baby was born. I knew about his feelings before we got married, and I'm okay with it. I can't argue with religion, and apparently, this is very important to DH.
PS. Before anyone gets excited, I'm NOT pregnant, nor am I on the TTC list.
