Jewish Wedding Ceremony
Does anyone know how long the ceremony is, what prayers are said etc. Also, do brides keep their veils on for the whole time? Who stands under the huppa with you? Thanks.

the ceremony is about a half hour. you meet with the rabbi before your wedding to discuss what prayers you want during the ceremony. we're having our parents under the huppa with us. i'm going to wear my veil for the ceremony, but take it off for the party.
The ceremony lenth really depends on how much you want to put into the ceremony. I've been to Jewish ceremonies that were a half hour. Mine was an hour because my husband and I wrote the entire ceremony, wrote our own vows and wanted every tradition in history incorporated (we lit candles, were wrapped in a tallis, did the circling, a special wine ceremony where i fed his parents and he fed mine the wine, we had musical selections....) We also wanted the rabbi to explain the traditions as we did them so people knew the significance & symbolism involved. We were really into details and it was beautiful, but most people that we know of kept their ceremonies short. Also, our parents were the only ones under the chuppa with us and the bridal party stood on either side.
I chose to wear my veil during the entire reception. Just a personal choice. It has nothing to do with religion.
A good book to get is The Complete Jewish Wedding they have it at Borders under the wedding section. I am going to wear my veil with the blusher thru the whole ceromony and then wear the veil without the blusher for the reception. All immediate family is supposed to be under the Chuppah.
Another good book (that became my bible!) is The New Jewish Wedding, by Anita Diamnond. She describes Jewish traditions and gives ideas about how to incorporate them into a wedding and have them mean whatever is special to you.
Also, I was married at Shelter Rock Jewish Center and my wedding was everything i ever wanted. Our guests are still raving! Mary is the person to talk to and she was my best friend throughtout the whole planning process. We even tried to tip her at the end of the evening and she would not accept it. She's just a class act. My cousin was married at Temple Judea and they also had a beautiful affair and enjoyed working with Jeff there.
Thanks for telling me about Temple Judea. How long ago did your cousin get married at Temple Judea? I went to look at it today. I don''t think Jeff is there, I met Bobby. It seemed like it was a nice place but the pews and the temple itself looked a little run down. Did you get married on a Sat night or Sunday morn/evening? Around how much was Shelter Rock per person? THanks for the info!
I was married on a Sat. night. Shelter Rock was $125/pp and $99/pp for every person over 200. Keep in mind that you also have to factor in other costs like gratuity, valet parking, etc. This was more that we wanted to spend, but we fell in LOVE with the place the second we walked in and Mary was just so professional & super nice & not pushy. They also have an incredible reputation. The food is unbeatable & they truly pay attention to every little detail.
My cousin got married at Temple Judea a year ago in May.
Any other questions, please ask!!
