Job Advice - what would you do?

Job Advice - what would you do?

Hope the 06 girls can help me out.

I work for a large non-profit in NYC and have been very unhappy in my job almost since day 1, which was about 2.5 years ago. But the money is good, we were planning the wedding, etc.etc...so I've stayed.

DH and I are considering relocating to CT. I recently found a position online at the same nonprofit, different branch in CT. Each organization is run independently so I know the experience would likely be a bit different.

My question is twofold-
1. Would you apply for the job even though you've had a bad experience at the NYC office?
2. How should I go about applying since I don't want them to contact the NYC office asking about me until much later in the process (my current office doesn't know I'm planning to relocate yet)?

Any thoughts or advice is greatly appreciated.

Apply! Each region of my company is totally different so I know how that goes. My good friend in another regional office HATES it there. Then again, she is in Kansas

As for the current office not knowing, make sure you note this in your interview. And be sure to tell them that they CANNOT contact your current office for a reference until you have an offer. By then I'm sure you would have confessed that you are relocating.

Good luck

1. Apply for the job. The worse that can happen is they say no, but at least TRY!

2. You can submit your resume with a page attached for references that states 'References Available upon request.'

However if the job application stipulates to submit references, then list your current job.

Most employers won't check references until after at least 1 interview, so they don't waste their time beforehand.

Hope this helps and good luck!

The new office will have different people, a different supervisor etc. That alone will change the environment. I say go for it, so long as you actually like the work that you are doing, if not the environment. If it's the job itself you hate, then the environment won't much matter, will it?

2. How should I go about applying since I don't want them to contact the NYC office asking about me until much later in the process (my current office doesn't know I'm planning to relocate yet)?
On the application I would just state Do not contact, or check off no on the application where it says can we contact. Another alternative is to state in your cover letter not to contact them. Of course, you can just tell your job you are planning to relocate (or that you are at least considering it. IMHO, the latter is the best option. You don't want a new job to think that you would keep secrets from them. It will get you off on the wrong foot, and could possibly damage your chances of getting the job.

Any thoughts or advice is greatly appreciated.
How solid is the plan to relocate? Are you just tossing around the idea, does DH have a job already lined up, are you actually looking for an apartment or a house? Before making any decisions you should consider everything. Just my two cents.
