Job Confusion

Job Confusion

Today I really started to feel that I did not want to be a teacher (I sub) and when I got home I received my certification document in the mail that I am now officially able to teach in any public school!

How in the world do you KNOW what career path to choose!?!?!?!?!

I'm so confused!

That's really hard. I think when you know you know, but that dones't mean there aren't bumps along the way. I thought I wanted to be a teacher, pretty much unequivocally for years...but once I did observation I reall;y decide that it might not be for me. I'm really interested in education, but I don't think elementary education os for me. On the other hand, I never knew I wanted to be a director, but I ended up doing it and loving it and feeling more alive than I've ever felt doing anything else, and now I know that's what i want to pursue. Maybe something's just temporaily frustrating you about teaching, or maybe you just hvaen't found the right job for you I guess it's like finding someone to marry except for one really important thing..you can change careers, many peple do. Sometimes you have to kind of fish around until you find the right place for you. Maybe you just don't like the type of teraching you're doing, area, student demographic, etc. Maybe you can go somewhere to take one of those tests that gives you job suggestions. Is there anything you remember doing in life or an activity you did in HS or college even briefly, that gave you that really good feeling? When you were a kid, what did you want to be wen you grew up?

Just keep an open mind. Best of Luck!

I subbed for 1/2 a year and hated it....really hated it...to the point where I thought that I didn't want to teach. However, after many ups and downs I now have my own classroom and I LOVE it. Not to say that teaching is for everyone, but if you just started out give it a chance. you have worked SO hard to get where you are now, and I know for me it was the 'not settled' feeling that I got subbing. I didn't really know anyone, the kids didn't act towards me the way they acted towards their classroom teachers, and so I was always questioning myself.

If you truly think that this is not what you want to do then explore some other areas in the education field...maybe reading, guidance, research, etc? Good luck!

Re: Job Confusion

thanks girls!

I have been subing since January and today was my first day back after the summer and the class was excellent in terms of behavior, but I just didn't want to be there at all. I love writing and researching so I have been considering looking into other options but I am just so afraid to make another bad move.

Subbing is sooooooooo much different from being a regular teacher. The kids are going to treat you differently, its not your classroom and you are going all different places..its S U C K S!!! I did it and I really didn't like it....just keep this in mind that its so much different than teaching your own class

really? Could it be THAT much different? I have been subing since January and I am not happy at all. I am thinking of switching careers at this point because I am so miserable.

Thanks for the advice though....

Have you considered talking to a career counselor - most colleges will let alumni come in for free or a reduced fee.

I work in this type of office on a local college campus - if you have questions about typical services, feel free to FM.

That's such a good idea. I just started (as in last week) utilizing the resources at my college career center and honestly it's been great so far. I feel like I'm in such good hands

Re: Job Confusion

Thats why I think we should be able to student teach etc earlier!! In my class it was my last semester! So after 5 years now I wasnt sure!!!! I still think I should have done something different... but I feel like I would have wasted so many years!! Well see what happens after my DH & I have a baby... I may decide to do something else..

Its just hard because once you have so many credits under your belt a lot of places dont like to hire you
