Any one know if you get a joint account before the wedding with you maiden name how that would effect you when you get married and the checks say, ' Mr& Mrs X'.? Could you still deposit even though your acct has your maiden name? I want to make sure I have that knowledge way before Just so that I dont leave it off my list.

Re: joint bank account
We opened a savings accout together when we got engaged - we actually added my name (maiden) to DH accounts. I was able to make deposits and withdrawals and all that. Then after we got married, I went to the bank and changed my name on the acct.

Re: joint bank account
It should be no problem as long as it's signed by your FH too.

Re: joint bank account
It won't be a problem - As long as there is a signature on the back, they will likely take it.
To be honest, I usually don't sign deposits - I just write 'Deposit Only ' + the bank account number. I don't know of anyone who had problems with this.

Re: joint bank account
We also opened one when we got engaged. right now both our names are on it and we can both write checks, deposit & withdrawal with no problem. When we get married we plan to change it to Mr. & Mrs. White. It shouldnt be a problem, we had already spoken to our banker about it.

We're planning the same thing, we opened up a joint checking account as soon as we moved in together a year ago. If we keep that account open (we might switch banks), we'll just change the name on the checks, otherwise we'll probably keep what we have until we move.

We opened a joint bank account when we got engaged. You can just write 'For Deposit Only' on the back of the check with your account number. It is no problem to change your last name on the account after the wedding, you just need idea and a copy of your marriage certificate. You will more than likely be putting in the wedding checks before your name is changed, but don't worry it's no problem!

Re: joint bank account
I think you're wondering about having to re-order checks with your new name, vs being able to use up the old ones before re-ordering...
Frankly, I don't know. I have been procrastinating on changing the address on my non-joint acct for AGES becuase I have all those checks to still use and I'm worried they'll make me reprint with the new address.....
We have a joint acct now, but I'm not changing my name, so I don't have the name change problem,.... only the address change...

Re: joint bank account
I have gotten checks already for my maiden and married name and I am not even married yet. They accept both as long as you tell them (chase)

Re: joint bank account
guests should know not to address the checks to mr and mrs x... but some do - most banks will let you signs for them, but make sure FH - then DH - signs too, or i don't think they will clear. ask your bank - i'll bet they deal with this all the time!!

Re: joint bank account
I would check with your bank, but I think you may just be able to show a copy of your marriage license when depositing the MR. and MRS checks. Why the heck do people write checks to Mr and Mrs. anyway? They know you need time to change your name and all.
We got a check from someone 2 months ago for our engagement (which we were very grateful for), but they wrote it to MR and MRS Aaron 'X.' UMMM- she wont exist until 4/6/08! Luckily, the bank just took it.

Re: joint bank account
It's so sad to say, but DH and I have a joint account and we put money in there only to pay our bills. Other than that we have our own accounts and pay our own bills. For example I pay My student loans My cell phone My car payment My Credit Card Bill
DH pays His cell phone his car payment his credit card bills
Money goes into the joint account Car insurance (because we are on one plan) Morgage/Property taxes Utilities.
I have friends that pooled their money together the second they got engaged... For some reason I like knowing where my money is going. DH and I each have a checking account, a savings account, and then a joint. We know how much money is in each others savings accounts, but our checking accounts are for us to do what we want once our bills individual bills are paid.

as long as your FH's name is on the account and he signs them, they will go in.

Re: joint bank account
I work at a bank and I advise you too open a joint acct. because you are going to get checks made out to Mr. & Mrs. and once you get your marriage Lic. you can change your name

Re: joint bank account
Thanks for all the replies. My SIL had a problem in the bank even though they knew who she was and that my brother and her were getting married. I dont know what bank it was but I wanted to be prepared.
