Did anyone open one before they were married? how was it afterwards to change your name? Was it a big hassle? do you recommend waiting until after the name change goes thru before opening an account?

Re: joint bank account
We opened one together after three months of dating. I thought FH who was just a BF at the time was crazy for asking, but he said I know I am going to marry you we might as well start saving now. It took him two years after that to ask me, but he wasn't kidding.
Your going to have to change a million things so a bank account is not going to be a big deal. You probably have to provide a marriage certificate or license with new name. I can't imagine it being too difficult.

Me and my FH have been living together a year, and opened one to put the bill money in there, and to pay for bills. We both have our regular accounts still.
I'm sure it's not that hard to change your name. But haven't had to do it yet

Re: joint bank account
we opened one about 3 days after we got engaged - a savings account that is linked to our personal checking accounts so we can both access it and we're getting *some* interest on it but not much

Re: joint bank account
We've had joint accounts for years. We're also on most of each others' credit cards.
I don't think the name change is an issue for banks. You just send in the paperwork and they'll issue a new card, and you actually tell them what to put on the checks. I would just not order checks if you don't need them, or only order a small amount so you don't waste too many,
When we opened our account, we didn't print the address on the checks because we didn't know where we'd be living after the wedding, so it just has our names on FH's account. My checking account (which is also joint) has my home address since I live at home and can always get mail here even after the wedding, etc.
ETA: In case it wasn't clear, we've maintained separate, but joint accounts. We'll probably consolidate after the wedding, but with us each paying our own set of bills (we don't live together) it made sense to maintain separate accounts. I also like being independent

Re: joint bank account
I just realized you're getting married in a week. I'd speak with the bank directly about the name change. You may be able to open the joint account in your new name after the wedding with your marriage license

Re: joint bank account
FH and I have had a joint checking and savings since we moved in together, it was just easier to pay bills that way. We both maintain our own seperate accounts but linked our accounts to the joint account. This way we can now automatically transfer savings into our wedding account and other money to pay bills. I can't foresee the changing of names to be a big problem, especially since you will married!

Thats y this is a problem hehe. Because my wedding is 10 days away.. got some checks already, wanted to deposit them, but if its going to be a pain in the butt afterwards, I should just wait

Re: joint bank account
FH had no job when we got engaged so I just added him to mine. Now everything goes there.

Re: joint bank account
We opened a joint checking to pay for the wedding. For Capital One I just had to bring my marriage license and they changed the account right while I was sitting there. We opened a Savings Account with our wedding money so that was of course after the wedding, I still needed my marriage license because I didn't have my new driving license or anything yet.
