joint bank account

Original post by Caprica6

Did anyone open one before they were married? how was it afterwards to change your name? Was it a big hassle? do you recommend waiting until after the name change goes thru before opening an account?

FH and I have had a joint checking and savings since we moved in together, it was just easier to pay bills that way. We both maintain our own seperate accounts but linked our accounts to the joint account. This way we can now automatically transfer savings into our wedding account and other money to pay bills. I can't foresee the changing of names to be a big problem, especially since you will married!

This is exactly what we did when we moved in together 3 years ago... it just made bills/saving a lot easier!

I just realized you're getting married in a week. I'd speak with the bank directly about the name change. You may be able to open the joint account in your new name after the wedding with your marriage license

Thats y this is a problem hehe. Because my wedding is 10 days away.. got some checks already, wanted to deposit them, but if its going to be a pain in the butt afterwards, I should just wait

The bank won't give you a hard time. I wrote 'for deposit only' on all of our checks. And it was very simple to change my name on the account, just had to bring my marriage license and it took 5 minutes.

We opened a joint account when we got engaged. I don't forsee it being an problem when it comes time to change your name. The bank does this on a daily basis I'm sure

We have a joint checking and savings account and we're slowly moving all of our finances together. I think the name change won't be anything difficult or new for the bank but if you're changing your name so soon you might as well wait?

We dont have joint accounts. Our money is seperate. He gives me $$ each paycheck for the wedding account that is also in my name...

Yes we opened one once we got engaged to save for the wedding!

we did this right after the engagement party since some of the checks had both names.

DH and I opened one right after our engagement party in 2010. We paid all of our vendors through it. It actually ended up being easier for the wedding bc all of our checks were to 'Mr.& Mrs. xxxxx', or 'Ricky & Kristen xxxxx'. We had no issues depositing any checks

and when it was time to change my name, all I has to show was my marriage license and my id (it had my maiden name still). Took 15 minutes and I was on my way

I was wondering about what people do when they get checks on their wedding with their new last names on it and they havent officially changed it yet... it's no big deal if u just show them your id with your maiden name and the marriage license????? I wanna change my name ASAP! hahaha

I actually just had my DH sign the backs of all the checks bc they were made out to our married name. We left for our HM the morning after the wedding so I had my mom deposit them all. It was just easier having him sign them, but I'm sure if you let the bank know beforehand, they can put a note on your account. You wont get your marriage license for a few weeks, it took about 2 for mine to come in.

I have heard you can just sign the check with both names. Sign once under maiden, once under married.

We actually already got soem checks made out to me under 'Mr. and Mrs. Hislastname' I'm not even tkaing his last name. I just signed it with my name and deposited them no problem. it probably helps though that in my singature my last name all you can make out is the first initial, which is also my FH's initial.

We Opened one when we moved in together (end of 2009) and we pay bills out of it, and buy wedding stuff with it-

Everything else - PIA

Re: joint bank account

We actually just opened a join account yesterday (yay). We were paying wedding bills separately, but realized it would probably be easier to have a joint account that we deposit money into every month to save for balances. We've also been receiving checks for our engagement so we' plan to deposit that money in there as well.

No experience with name changing yet, but the woman who helped us at the bank didn't make it seem like a big deal.

Re: joint bank account

DH and I opened our joint bank account when we moved in together. When we started saving for the wedding, she opened an ING Direct account and put all of our wedding savings into that. It has since become the house saving fund

I haven't officially changed my name yet since I have some vacations booked under my old name, but I don't think it's a big hassle to change your name at the bank. After you officially change your name with the SS office, go to your bank and let them know of the name change and it should be no problem.
