JOINT BANK ACCOUNTS????????????????

Original post by Borricuamorena0905

Do u plan on having a joint bank account once you get married....

My FH is a REAL Stickler for money and I believe we would be divorced faster then a speeding bullet if he tries to control my funds...

I asked another married lady and she said she has her own, and she also has a joint one for the house and future ventures that they are saving for... I think that is what we will do...

We have a joint bank account and we couldn't be happier. It doesn't matter who puts more money in as long as it gets put in there and the bills get paid off. Of course, if my bills are high, FH complains, but that's a different story

right now we have our own, and also a joint one....but we really should just get rid of our seperate ones, because we transfer money like crazy from his to mine

when we get married tho (if not sooner) we will only have a joint one

i really don't understand how 1 person has thier own money and the others don't...

what is the point in being as 1, but you can't touch the other money? when you get a mortage, are you gonna split it 50/50? if fh buys a truck, isn't it your truck also? The idea of people really believe that a couple can't handle the couple's money is beyond me.

i hope you girls (whomever keeps their own stash) really think and say, we are in this together. its like your cheating with money in my mind. this is my opioion and don't take it personal.

to explain my story...

fw moved in after 6 mths of dating. ever since then, we have shared every penny we earned. we purchased 2 cars together, gone on vacations, etc... 1 account, simple to clean. given the month and timeframe, maybe we watch what we spend, but others we are 1.

you have a valid point, and i agree that everything is shared, and that marriage is about being one. However, i dont think that having my own bank account considers me a financial fleusy (dont worry... i dont take your comment personal, and im not offended, i just have a different point of view o the topic )

i dont think anyone here who keeps their own account is doing it so that they can put away secret money and take a luxurious trip over to europe and get some massages from some hot dude named Sven.... i think its a personal matter that everyone, and every COUPLE needs to decide upon for themselves. example- i smoke. FH absolutely hates it. i wouldnt want to take money out of our Joint account to buy cigarettes, b/c it would seem like i was using his money, too, to pay for something he detests, so instead, i use my money for my own guilty pleasures. it was a weak example, but the point is that everyone has their own situations w/in their relationship, and theres no cookie cutter mold or blanket statement that should be made as to how people handle their finances- the only 2 people that should be concerned about Your bank account etiquette is You and FH/W.

Unfortunately I am really anal about money. I am a saver and FI is such a spender. If our money was together right now I would want to kill him and vice versa. Right now what works is having separate bank accounts, if things change in the future then so be it, but right now I'm happy with the way things are.

We have decided that since I take care of all the bills in the house that it would be easier to just have one joint account instead of many different ones... But I will still have my own money put away... Just for a rainy day...

Re: JOINT BANK ACCOUNTS????????????????

We have three accounts. Out of each paycheck, we put a certain amount into our joint account for all our bills then keep the rest (not much ) into our own personal savings account. Although it may not work for everyone, it works for us. Our priorities are different, I enjoy shopping for the houseand he enjoys spending money on Loews and Home Depot. But we didn't want to have to call each other everytime we wanted to buy something because whats important to me (a Martha-Stewart-homey-house) is not necessarily important to him (bare-walls-but-awesome-tools) So, its just what works for you....

FI and I have a mortgage that we split, a rental income that we split, we split bills and so on. FI just got a new SUV....it is costing over $650 a month...I find that to be ridiculous, he also spends his money in ways that I wouldn't. It's not that we aren't one. It's not like we are cheating with our money. He always has the money to pay the bills we need to pay, but I would freak out everytime he made a big purchase. I do believe that we will eventually have joint accounts, (like when this lease is up ) until then, this works for us and we are still 1.

We have both a joint checking and savings account now- but he and I both also have our own seperate checking accounts for the simple reason that he owns his own businesses and uses his own checking for some expenses. I like having my own account also,- so I can keep track of my spending much more accurately.
