We are having my FH's little sister in the Bridal party. She is 12 right now and will have just turned 13 at the time of our wedding. The bridesmaid dresses are long, black, strapless gowns and I don't think that it is really appropriate for her to wear, you know? She looks very young for her age and it would just look weird. Since she is at an in between age, I would assume she would be a Jr. bridesmaid, but what do I have her wear? Would it look weird to have her in a dress that is black and white? (like white bodice, black bottom) The problem is that she wants to wear what all of the other girls are wearing. ( she is VERY strong-willed)To make her feel better, do I tell her that the dress that the other girls are wearing don't come in her size (They don't, but the girl at the bridal salon said that they could alter it a lot to fit her)? Thanks!

Re: Jr Bridesmaid?
What does your FI's mother think of her wearing the dress? I think if she is fine w/ it, then you should have them alter it. If not, why not just find a black dress that is more 'appropriate' for her?

If she wants to wear it and her mother has no problem with it, let her wear it. My friend was in her sisters wedding party at about the same age and she wore the same dresses as the girls.

Well, my brother (who will be ten) will be introduced with her during the reception and she will walk down the aisle by herself. She'll pretty much do what the rest of the girls are doing. Are you having anyone else in the wedding close to her age?
I guess we could put her in the same dress and have straps added. She wants to wear the same dress, but she doesn't feel comfortable in strapless dresses...so I am not really sure what to do. FH actually thought that the dress was too mature for her and when I thought about it I agreed. Thanks for the suggestions!

Re: Jr Bridesmaid?
My junior bridesmaid was 13 at the time of my wedding. My girls wore halter top dresses and everyone agreed that was too mature for her. My dresses were Alfred Angelo and we found a coordinating style - satin on top - chiffon on the bottom that had spaghetti straps. It was another BM dress that we had altered down alot but complemented the BM dress I used for the other girls. In the end - I let her do everything else the girls did so I think she felt like a BM and not a young kid

I might have an idea...although I would suggest you convince her to wear a dress with broad straps (appropriate for her age)...if she is stuck on having the same dress as the other girls...you can have the dress altered to her size as the seamstress suggested and then have them add thin halter straps. That way you are all happy. JMO. Hope this helps.

That might work! The only thing is that the dress has this 1/2 inch of toole with black ribbon right above the top of the dress. I am not sure how it would look, but we can always ask the seamstress what she thinks.
FH's older sister had an idea this morning. She said that she will work on her little sister and just tell her that there is no way to get the dress in her size. She will tell her that I want her to really stand out and look special. Then we will give her a choice of two dresses that compliment the other dresses. I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks for the suggestions, I really appreciate them!
