Juice Question

Juice Question

Everything I read says you can start giving juice around the 6 mo. mark. Ryan has never really loved it and I'm having a hard time trying to 'fit' it into the whole eating/drinking schedule. I've also read stuff that says never give juice in a bottle. Well, that's interesting considering we are just trying to get him used to a sippy cup and he is WAAAAY more interested in banging it around than drinking from it.

How have all you BTDT Moms done juice??

Edited to add that I know you don't have to give juice and I know you should limit the amount, but I'm just curious...

Re: Juice Question

One thing Billy would never tolerate for some reason was juice..
I tried so hard to get him to drink some but he HATED it so I gave up.
I dont know if that was the right thing to do..
I tried to substitute by feeding him more fruit foods.
He is 7 now and STILL hates juice

Re: Juice Question

in the summer I would give julianne water bottles...so she would not get dehydrated...
Sometimes I would add 1oz of apple juice to it.

from time to time now she will have about 1 or 2 oz of apple juice in her sippy cup ( I need to make sure to keep her 'regulated' or she gets constipated).

i have also found the tiny juice boxes by juicy juice....works well...Im trying to get her used to a straw

I think the limit is 4 oz of juice a day...much better for them to get the vitmains from the actual fruit

Re: Juice Question

I do the same thing as Phyl. Annalise only gets juice now if she seems to be having alot more milk that day than she needs. I dilute it with half water. I just started giving it to her this month. At about 6 months the gastroenterologist said juice is empty calories so I do not need to give her any. I guess her situation with reflux caused her to need as much breastmilk as I can get in her. I do not think it is a must at that age.

Re: Juice Question

Lee, I was going to suggest trying a straw with Ryan, too. He might pick it up faster than a sippy cup.

Paul only gets his juice once a day - cut w/water, in the morning before breakfast. The rest of the his day is just milk or plain water.

Don't sweat it...if Ryan doesn't really like juice, just make sure he drinks plenty of water in between meals and milk servings.

Re: Juice Question

Thanks guys. I guess I'll just keep giving him the sips of water throughout the day and see if he'll take a little juice cut with water once in a while.

How long did the sippy cup thing take to master? I never thought about a straw - sounds like a good idea though...

Re: Juice Question

Lee - a little advice on the straws? Get the 'bendy' kind! The first couple of times that Paul tried a straw, it was a disaster, b/c he'd tip the entire cup toward him, and end up wearing the water/juice/whatever!

And to answer the other question....Paul did not master the sippy cup right away either. Partially (I think) b/c I waited until he was over 12 mos. to introduce him to it, and by that point, he was soooo in love w/his bottle. But, he finally got the hang of it, and I made sure not to waste any time phasing out the bottle! We were done w/bottles completely by the time he was 15 mos. old.

Re: Juice Question

I still dont give Luke very much juice. Sometimes I do half apple, half water but mainly he drinks water or milk. Juice has a lot of sugar in it (natural or otherwise) so I dont see the point. Luke use to mainly play with the sippy cup too - probably around Ryans age and then one day he realized how it worked. Keep giving it to him and I'm sure one day he'll just pick it up.

Re: Juice Question

So, when did everyone wean off the bottle? I'm wondering how the heck I'll get him to sleep when the time comes?!?!

I guess we'll just keep banging the cup around till he gets it!!

Claud, I'm paranoid Ryan will poke his eye out with a straw!!

Re: Juice Question

Aidan never did well with juice-- He liked it but always seems to get an upset stomach after. I only give him one juice box a day . And only if I feel like he has had enough milk.
He did not like the sippy cup at first -- but then he caught on and I tossed the bottles. He was on all sippy cups at 12 months. Now he wants to use a real cup -- but he does not know how -- and he dumps it .. SO we use the straw-- like Claud. He loves juice boxes -- but I had to buy a juice box holder -- so he cant squeeze it . My Dr. told me that they do not need the juice... He said not to give them more than 1 a day -- but thats just my Dr?
