I am feeling a little better. I guess I can say what my dilemma was... I got a job offer at a great company (fortune 500). Currently I work at a start -up company. Once I made the hard decision to leave my current job, I was so sad and scared because me leaving could = them going out of business. Telling them on Friday was the hardest day of my life. I know it doesnt sound like such a big deal, just quitting a job, but no one else can do my job there.

Re: Jultz33.....
No the job isn't in NJ. It is in Stony Brook, right near my current job. I am a chemist... right now 'Formulation Scientist' and will be a 'Product Development Chemist' basically the same thing. Where I am now is a start-up company so there are only a few of us. I have been here for 2 years and it has been like being on a rollercoaster I used to run 1 lab and since a coworker left now I manage 2 labs. And since we are a start up I am now the only full-time one in the lab. So me leaving is a BIG DEAL for them. I feel like I am betraying my coworkers by leaving them. It sounds stupid to be this upset about leaving a job and you would have to be in my shoes, or work for a start-up, to understand. I can't even be exited about my new job right now, especially after the day I had yesterday. I start the new job Dec. 13.

Aww Julie! Even though it was hard to tell them, it must feel like a weight off your shoulders now that the decision has been made! For what it's worth, I think you made the right decision!

awwwww i'm sorry. I know that you're the only person that knows how to do the work, but no job should give an employee a hard time about leaving.

Re: Jultz33.....
little piece of advice..i know you feel connected to your old job and you don't want to let them down, however, the most important person to take care of is you. don't think about what it will do to the company you are currently with. focus on the good and if they gave you a hard time, that should only confirm you feelings of wanting to move on and up. hang in there i know it will work out for you.

I know, but it is still hard. Here is a FM I just sent someone, a little more info...
It was horrible. There are only 8 of us left. Only 4 of us in Stony Brook. We have me in the lab, 2 customer service girls, one shipping guy, 1 in marketing, and 2 for computers, and then theres the 'president' who used to be the finance guy until our old president left. I told him and immediately he said to me 'You know what this means, the company can fold becuase of you' and then he said 'You call Xxxx and Xxxx your friends, well soon they will be unemployed thanks to you' It was awful. Later on he apologized but the only reason why I was hesitating about taking the new job was I was worried about my friends there and what would happen to them if I left. One of them has a 1 year old baby and he and his wife barely make enough money now, imagine if he lost his job. And then my friend Alaina who is actually on LIW (laughinlala) just got engaged and is planniing a wedding and just went into contract on a house a week ago I was so worried about what would happen to them... but then again our company almost goes out of business at least once a week It sucks! This new job is a fortune 500 compnay with full benefits, i mean EVERYTHING plus tuition reimbursement which I need because I want to go back. I just bought a house and I need some more stability. Plus I got more money because being from a start-up I was underpaid. The only thing holding me there was my coworkers, and that is what he had to throw in my face when I resigned. Plus I gave 3 weeks notice and offered to work late every day and on the weekends to help prepare for those 3 weeks and his response was that isn;t good enough! 'why couldnt you wait to leave for a few more months?' Hello... I have 2 job offers RIGHT NOW for more money with great benefits, and three more interviews. Right now there are a lot of jobs. Last summer when I was looking I didn't find even 1 interview!!!! I spoke to my 2 coworkers/friends and they understand. It was one of the worst moments of my life.

you are doing the right thing Julie and for the 'president' to say that to you is just plain crap...that is harrassment....how dare he! So unprofessional...
You are right, you need more stability, benefits, everything to make you feel safe. Good Luck with the new job and don't feel guilty....

wow thats harsh. i can see where you would be so upset about your decision. the opperative word being 'your.' plain and simple, people suck. i'm sure that this company will land on its feet. i'm sorry that you had to go through that at your old company. don't let it bring you down. you are not responsible for what happens to other people. i work for a fortune 500 company, and the benefits alone, were enough for me to leave my old job. i'm sure it will all work out for the best.

Re: Jultz33.....
wow... that took some nerve of the president. I know you care about your co-workers and it is going to be tought but again you have to look out for yourself and your family right now. You just got married and bought a house. You have things going on too!

I totally understand...I've been there and almost did not quit a job because I was afraid they couldn't get along without me. But you know what, you have to do what's best for YOU and I think you did. Remember, as much as you love your current job, if that company needed to lay you off, they wouldn't be as concerned about you, they would just do it. Good luck!

My thoughts exactly. They would not put as much care and thought into having to lay you off if the need arose. I understand your thoughts about your co-workers but they will be ok. Maybe the new company will have a place for them too if the need arises.
Congrats on the new job! That is great news and you need to concentrate on the great job you have accomplished!
