How come there is so many people that opts not to do the garter or bouquet toss? I was just curious...

Re: Just a question
There aren't going to be many single girls at my wedding, so it just didn't make sense. And I always hated getting dragged up there, so I swore not to do it at my wedding.
And I am just not comfortable doing the garter toss. I am very shy and we are not overly affectionate in front of our families, so I know it would make them as uncomfortable as I would be sitting there with FH's head up my dress.

Re: Just a question
For me, I would have been embarrassed to have my husband 'crawling' under my dress in front of everyone. And it also left more time for dancing. There weren't announcements to sit down for this or for that.

Re: Just a question
I know in my family that there is not too many people who are unmarried. I might just decide to give my bouquet to my mom. She has been through a lot through the past year and it is a moment I know she'll treasure.

Re: Just a question
I dont know if this is true here, but since times are different and most of us are older now (not like my parents who were married at 21!) a lot of people feel that most of their guests are no longer single... this is what I was told from a friend who is NOT on these boards... so I thought about it and it kind of makes sense... but I'm still doing it!
Garter toss - a lot of people feel uncomfortable with it... I find it fun!

Re: Just a question
we didn't do it - I used to love it and be the first girl out on the floor. But I've outgrown it and never really liked the garter bit. Its hard to pull off without being cheesy.
Also it singles out single people, and as you get older - those people are a lot less excited to be singled out.
I haven't been to a wedding thats done it in years. And it hasn't been missed.

Re: Just a question
We are in our thirtees and didn't want to do any of that. Plus many of our friends are married.I also didn't like the idea of my hubby going up my dress in front of everyone. It was just something we both weren't into doing at the wedding.

Re: Just a question
I'm not doing the bo-k toss because of something that happened to me at a wedding.
I was the only single woman over the age of 9 at the wedding, and was forced on to the dancefloor by an ex boyfriend, (literally pushed) and all of my friends. So there I was with a 9 year old girl. I stood there with my arms folded and let her catch it...while everyone yelled my name to catch it. After I didn't catch it, I was told by one person'I guess you'll be an old maid', and 'you guys are never getting married'. They were right, I dumped his sorry ass not too soon after this pathetic display.
I just don't want to put any of the very few single woman at my party in this embarrassing position....it's a different story if you have a lot of young single women at the party.
And the garter toss, we aren't doing because FH and I just don't feel like that kind of display in front of a priest who will be there, as well as kids....

Re: Just a question
We will have a bunch of over 30 single girls that don't want to get up there and not too many single guys.
We are doing an anniversary dance instead.
We will do the garter removal though. We will then have the longest married couple come to the dance floor and present her with the BO-K and him with the garter. If it is my Aunt and Uncle married the longest(that I think it will be) we will have him put the garter on her. This couple is such a ham it wil be soooooo funny

Re: Just a question
The first time I went to a wedding where they didn't do it, it took me until the end of the night to realize that it didn't happen. Nobody missed it & it didn't interrupt the dancing.
That's why we didn't do it. Aside from having few single women there, we didn't want to stop the party for anything! In hindsight, while the anniversary dance was very nice, I wouldn't do that either, if I had it to do all over. We should have let the band play for everyone to dance to, that's what our guests wanted ... to dance!

Re: Just a question
I hate singling out single girls... I hated being that single girl. I may do it if there are 10+ single girls but I wont because I dont want them to have to be the center of attention if they dont want to be.

Re: Just a question
Same here - not enough single friend and since most of our friends are in the 30's they preferred not to be called out at 30 and single. My few single friends thanked me. I am not against them actually find it entertaining - it just wouldn't work in my situation.

Re: Just a question
Misty - You have definitely made me feel stronger about my decision to not do this. The single women at mine are all late 30's (includine 3/4 of my BMs). I told them if any of them wants me to do it, I will. They all declined. I think it can be a fun tradition if you have a large group of young women that WANT to participate.
Garter - NO WAY.

Re: Just a question
I always hated being dragged up there. Especially when you are there with a boyfriend, which makes the whole scenario even more awkward. Yes, you are 'technically' single, but seriously commited and don't consider yourself 'single'.
I think it mainly depends on your crowd and if you feel comfy with it...

Re: Just a question
I'll be doing both the bouquet and garter toss at my wedding because we have a ton of single friends (I'm 22 and FI is 23). I like the tradition and think it will bring some laughs to the wedding. But I think it's fine not to have it, nobody will notice if they are having so much fun dancing!

Re: Just a question
We tossed the bo-k but did not do the garter- that way the girls at my wedding had the opportunity to catch a very nice bo-k but didn't have to be mortified!
