Just got back from alteration quote on my gown....

I just got home from getting a quote on my gown's alterations- Since i bought it I have lost 57 pounds, yet I am excited I lost so much weight, it is going to cost me 650.00 to alter. The sleeves have to be bought in, the dress has to be hemmed, and the bustle, then the beading has to be redone because they have to move everyhting becuase of the weght loss, do u think this is a reasonable price? I am so afraid to go to a private seamstress for this so I am going to a store becuase they deal with this everyday. OPINIONS?

How many sizes down are you? That sounds like so much $ to me- but I am not sure how much it is supposed to cost. Maybe you should shop around a little? It could not hurt to get more opinions.

WO WOW WOW.. COngrats on your weight loss

Honestly, when I have a ANY question about alterations, I go to www.sewdeb.com.. you can email her at [email protected] .. she is fabulous! she'll give you honest advice.. she's not located here in NY, but will tell you whether or not it's worth paying ..

the seamstress did not tell me, but I am estimating 4 to 5 sizes.

I think this is a reasonable price if you did not buy the dress at that store. I bought my dress at a sample sale so I had to find my own seamstress.
I'm using the same store that my bridesmaids are using for their dresses. I was quoted 250 for a french bustle and about another 100 for pressing/steaming.

Good luck!!!! Happy Planning!!!!

I bought the dress at another store. I am going to have it altered where the Bm are getting there dresses.

i think that price is pretty reasonable. when you go down that many sizes, they have to essentially re-cut the entire dress. they also have to move all the beading and reattach any beading that gets cut off.

Personally, I think that is way too much. That's more than some dresses cost! I would call around and get some more quotes.

Congrats on the weight loss!

That is a lot of money. Why don't you ask at a couple of places and see if you get a better quote?

you'd probably get a better price going through a seamstress that isn't associated with a bridal salon (everything wedding related gets the price jacked up).

My MIL is a seamstress (in a dry cleaners) and she deals with wedding dresses all the time. Just be sure to go to one that has experience in this area. I think you could easily save $200.

Also there are seamstress/designers (like Karin Y) that not only design and make wedding dresses but do alterations as well. Its worth getting a second or third quote for that kind of money.

CONGRATS!!!! That's really great news...how did you do it?

$650 sounds high to me but you should be so proud of yourself....Let it be the best $650 you ever spend!!!

to be honest, IMO that doesn't sound too bad given the amount of work that they will most likely have to do to the dress...
Congrats on the weight loss....that's fantastic!!!!!

I bought my dress as a sample dress, size 10 and I am normally a size 2 to 4 so the dress was very big on me. It looked horrible actually. I am going to a seamstress in San Diego, but I expected a quote to be up to $400 being from NY, but it is actually $120. That probably has a lot to do with me being in San Diego and not NY, but still I would think that $400 would be a fair price.

wow! That's great! congrats!

I think $650 sounds high, but on the other hand you want to make sure that the work gets done right.
