I am an absolute wreck. i've had 3 panic attacks in the last hour and a half since it happened. If anybody knows of ANYTHING...please let me know...I'm FREAKING out!!!
ETA: I had NO warning...as far as i know I'm not getting any severance...and tomorrow is my birthday
ETAA: please pray for me and my husband that we'll make it through this tough time.

wow that is so horrible and cruel to do in the holiday season.
try posting on all the boards...maybe someone is in your field and can help you out...also check out craigslist and careerbuilder.

worst part is that I just realized I was only there for 5 months and 20 days...so now I am not eligible for unemployment
I have never even considered unemployment but with the economy the way it is...who knows when i'll get another job...I have a mortgage and bills to pay! ugh!

Did you have a job before this one? You can still collect unemployement... you just have to have been working over 6 months.... it can be from two different jobs. This happened to me too but I was able to collect. I would still apply and see what happens. I am so sorry you are going through this. But it will work out for the best. I promise!!

i did...I ended employment with my previous employer on July 12th and started officially July 14th even thought I had worked 1 day the week before that for orientation

I am almost 100% positive you can still collect. What will happen is that you will apply on line and then they will tell you that you will have to call them. Then they just ask you some info about your previous job. If you didn't apply today, def apply first thing Monday morning.

Oh Melody I am sooooo sorry to hear about this. I myself am nervous about being laid off - january will be worrisome for me. I hope you find something very very soon!!!!!

so sorry to hear about this, ugh such hard times. Collect unemployment and start searching after next week. You will find something - think positively, it is a new door opening instead of a door closing. I know it sounds cheesy but it really helps in this situation (i have been there.)

Make sure you do apply for unemployment. Let the dept of labor tell you that you dont qualify, dont just assume.
My other advice is to check out temp agencies. If you dont really care what you are doing, I had good luck with them. The job I worked out before this one I was a temp that was later hired.

OmG I'm soooooooo sorry!!! Def. try to collect for unemployment! I would start putting my resume out there... and you should be able to get a job faster than many others because you have experience being a manager. I'm really sorry this is happening to you during the holiday season... thats terrible...

ok, I've regained my composure.
I applied to 2 jobs...but I must say...you can tell the economy is down the tubes because I don't get NEARLY as many job posting returns as when I used to search. it's slim pickins...
BUT Tomorrow...I am going to enjoy my birthday. My husband wants me to go shooting in connecticut with him...it'll be good to get my aggressions out...and the nature will be good for me to relax.
Sunday I'm going to take pics of things I need to get rid of and try to sell them on ebay to make us some more of a cushion until I get a new job.
Monday I'm going to the unemployment office bright and early to see what my options are to make sure my bills get paid and we're not eating ramen noodles. Then I'm going job hunting in roosevelt field mall or the shopping strip where I worked.
if that turns up nothing...I'll start with recruiting agencies and see what jobs I can find in Manhattan since thats where the $ is.

You dont have to go the unemployment office, you have to file for unemployment online.

Eventually whatever town you live in (town of hempstead, town of oyster bay etc) will usually have some employment services you have to go for to continue receiving unemployment benefits. I know that you can receive funding to get training, you just have to be persistant.
that stinks! dont stress too much though...the economy is slow so its happening a lot. file for unemployment and use that free time to look for another opportunity.
