Just got off with the hall giving my final counts and they suggested

$4 per person as a tip for the Matire D. That seems high to me. Am I wrong?

What are you planning on tipping per person just for the Matire D.

I would not give it in advance, I would give it the day of. What if you are not happy with your Maitre D.

I don't remember what we paid but I wouldn't pay him ahead of time. You are tipping him that $$ for the job he does the night of your wedding -

I would not give in advance. Also, I would think the tip should be no more than a few hundred, so depending on how many people you have at the wedding, $4 might be a little too high.

$4 is high... I am pretty sure its $2/ person, but I strongly suggest waiting to see if he or she really deserves it. They should earn their tip, it shouldnt be a given minimum.... JMO

Well I'm sure HE'D love to get $4 pp. But I don't think that's the even the norm. Don't pay in advance. They work for that tip that night, you won't get the same service, I'll bet.

i would wait until after the reception to give it--make sure he stays on his toes.

One hall we went to gave us a percentage number and that equated out to 7 pp. crazy!

I would ABSOLUTELY NOT pay a gratuity prior to the event. Why do places try and get away with this? I am on the warpath today -- he will be tipped, as you deem appropriate, if you deem appropriate, when and if he lives up to your expectations!

I would not give in advance. We ended up giving $5 pp. because Michael was amazing. He was our Day of Coordinater, my attendent and the BM. He earned every penny of it. If he had not been as wonderful we would have given less. How can you know what your person will deserve in advance?!!

They suggested 1-3 a head. No I would not give it with my final payment. I would give it based on how they do. Your Matre D should be splitting it among the waiters. If they, including the Matre D, do an awsome job, then you pay what you think you should pay per head. Not what someone else told you. And yes, I think 4 dollars is high, but maybe they are just that awesome

I forgot what amount we did, but there is no way I would give in advance and I can't believe they said that. I had the tip money in an envelope and gave it to my coordinator to give at the end of the night - AFTER the affair was over. We thought he did such a good job - and my dad is a waiter so for him to say that meant alot so we gave him a little more that the 'standard amout' we put in the envelope.

ETA - I remember what we did now. They gave us a range and we picked the middle amount as the average to give and then figured if we were really impressed we would add more later. I think it was $3-$5 so I think we did $4.

I have heard that $2-5 is average...

my dad is covering our tip and will prob. pay about $4 per person...

DO NOT give the maitre'd his tip in advance! If you wind up with the one I had, you'll regret it! I was annoyed when WM told me I should be giving $4-$5 pp, and tried to guilt me into it by saying it goes to the entire waitstaff, after I had already been told it does not.

A gratuity should be based on the service you receive, and certainly not be given beforehand.
