We tipped after our reception was over and should have taken money out

Our tip was $3pp but that was for maitre'd, bridal attendant and captain. This is what the hall told us to give for all 3 so we did. Our bridal attendant sucked and maitre'd was mediocre, have no idea about the captain.

DH gave ours about $5. per person, but he was very attentive and did an excellent job. We also had a smaller wedding though- about 65 people.

Okay, I am getting confused...my contract says 18% service charge plus the current sales tax. The 18% service charge for 200 people is 10.80 pp plus tax. Is my math bad? NO. I orginally figured that it is $20 extra pp. with tip, tax for everything and everyone. Am I mistaken? This would actually make my hall $20 more pp. Please let me know as I give my 2nd payment Mon. Thanks

as far as I know all the reception halls I have gone to they suggest at least $250.00 for the Maitre D; and most of the estimates that I have all say 18.5%. So far I have not made a contract with no one and I know the clock is ticking.

My hall set up my deposits and then the calculate at the end as follows:

Assume $100 per person, 100 guests

100 people x $100 = $10,000
18% Service charge = 1,800
Subtotal $11,800
8.75% sales tax = 1,033
Total = $12,833
Less deposits (6,000)
Balance due = $ 6,833

This assumption shows its actually$128.33pp

I am going in with the thought of giving $3 per person, but if my maitre'D is exceptional then I will maybe give a little more (like an extra $50)
Definetly tip after the event. I can't see tipping someone before the service is performed. I can see putting the gratuity on the bill for the catering hall but not the individual.

I was wondering- who actually gets the gratuity when the catering hall includes it????

My hall suggested $2-3 a person. We gave our final payment the week before.

We had an 18% gratuity added to our bill. We assumed that, that included the Matire D now I wondering if it did? Ihope not, because he didn't deserve anytip and should pay us for all the mistakes he made like NOT putting down the dance floor we requested!

you shouldn't have to pay tax on the 18% gratuity...i believe halls disguise the tip as a 'service charge' and then get away with it. but technically, one does not pay tax on tip. we didn't...

For my hall its $1 pp for day time weddings and 1.50 pp for night time

Nope, I wouldn't pay in advance. I don't believe in tipping until after the service is performed.

I agree, but they are saying its a service charge and I must pay tax. I don't think I can refuse....can I?

I dont care what they suggest I am going to tip whatever I feel is appropriate for the job the person does during the reception, end of story... sooo tip whatever you feel the person deserves

that is a very good point, I have to remember it when it is time for me to pay
