Just got this email from my waitressing job... #6 bothers me...would you be mad?
Summer Uniform Policy:
1. Black or Khaki pants, shorts, or skorts. 2. Polo shirt with Logo. 3. Name Tag. 4. Completely Black or Brown shoes. 5. No excessive jewelry. One ring and post earrings only. (no dangling earrings.) 6. Make up is not required but will add to your tips. 7. If you work service a half apron is required.
***Please make sure all uniforms are cleaned daily and you look your best.
#6 really bothers me. I can't really explain why. Am I being petty?

nah, the tone I get is that they are trying to lighten up an email that probably shouldn't *need* to be sent in the first place. I took it as the writers bit of humor... and its probably true!

I can understand why it bothers you, but there is a lot of truth to it as well.
I look at it as simply a fact of life - people are motivated by aesthetics. Personally, I don't wear makeup to work most days at all because it shouldn't and doesn't matter what I look like, because I'm here to do a job, not look pretty. However, I get paid the same money regardless - that's not the case when you're getting tips. Once again, not saying its right, it just is what it is.

i don't see anything wrong with it. i would be more annoyed if make up WAS required! i think the writer is just trying to say that people (guys especially) would probably tip more to girls with a little make up on. is the whole attitude sexist? sure - but we all know it is true!!!

Well, the good thing is that you are beautiful Julz! Maybe other women need it more than you! I think tips often have something to do with how friendly (and sometimes even flirty) you are...But I knew women in college who wore VERY low cut shirts and made a ton of tips...I guess maybe the makeup is along the same lines as that since you have a uniform and don't have any say in dress...

I'm sure you do very well, and absolutely service is much more important than what you look like, but it doesn't change the fact that people are absolutely motivated by looks - subconsciously if not consciously.
When I first entered the work force, my dad who is honestly the least superficial person alive, straight out told me that if a young, attractive, fit person interviewed in his office and a less attractive, overweight person interviewed for the same position, provided they had the same qualifications, the more attractive person would get the job.
And I just have to add that from your pictures, you're a very pretty girl so it might not affect you personally one way or another.

I was also going to say that you are beautiful and it probably doesnt apply to you. However some women do need make-up.
