Just had my wallet stolen - I'm paranoid of identity theft! Help?

I don't care about the money, but my lisence is gone. My sister in law has been in a two year battle to repair her credit after her's was stolen and credit cards were opened in her name.

I already closed out the credit cards and filed a police report.

do I need to contact a Credit Bureau? Anyone know anything about how to protect myself?

Two weeks until I move to North Carolina and NYC rears it's ugly head once again! I can't wait to leave...

Thanks for any info!!

Thanks for the hugs girls!! i NEED IT... I'm trying not to cry or get too dramatically upset about it (classic me) given what happened in London this morning, it helps keep it in perspective.

This is the THIRD time in the past year I have been robbed/pickpocketed. I am SO careful, but apparently I am a great little target.

So sorry to hear the news, I hope this can help.

But here's some critical information to limit the damage in case this happens
to you or someone you know. As everyone always advises (1) cancel your credit
cards immediately, but the key is having the toll free numbers and your card
numbers handy so you know who to call. Keep those where you can find them
easily (having to hunt for them is additional stress you WON'T need at that
point!). (2) file a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where it
was stolen, this proves to credit providers you were diligent, and is a first
step toward an investigation (if there ever is one). (3) But here's what is
perhaps most important: Call the three national credit reporting
organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and SS#. I had
never heard of doing that until advised by a bank that called to tell me an
application for credit was made over the Internet in my name.

The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information
was stolen and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit. By
the time I was advised to do this - almost 2 weeks after the theft all the
damage had been done there are records of all the credit checks initiated by
the thieves' purchases, none of which I knew about before placing the alert).
Since then, no additional damage has been done, and the thieves threw my
wallet away this weekend (someone turned it in). It seems to have stopped
them in their tracks.

The numbers are:

a. Equifax 1-800 525-6285
b. Experian (formerly TRW) 1-800-301-7195
c. Trans Union 1-800-680-7289
d. Social Security Administration also has a fraud line at 1-800-269-0271

Everyone gave you great advice, especially about placing the fraud alert on your SSN.

I hope you're ok - were you in NYC?

I always feel a different vibe in the city during the summer

I'm okay, thank you for asking. It's always that violated feeling right after - you know?

And yes - the city is a different place in the summer.

It was swiped out of my bag when i set it down RIGHT NEXT TO ME at the Starbucks milk/sugar kiosk. I had a weird vibe about the woman pushing up against me, but i ignored it. I looked in my bag an hour later and it was gone. I can't imagine it happened at any other time...

Ugh. No matter how careful you are, you have to be more careful.

Were you able to successfully put an alert on your SSN? I recently had a credit card number stolen and was able to put an alert with all three credit companies, but when I called the SS, they said they didn't have anything like that.
