Just learned that we need to find somewhere else to live...

The original plan has been that FH and I were to live in his grandparents' house. His grandfather just passed away, and Grandma is staying in a nursing home, so the house was technically ours- not in name yet b/c there's a living will on it, but his parents had us go ahead and start doing all the work on the house and things that needed to be done. It was understood that they would be charging us something, but they hadn't come up w/ an amount yet, and we thought that amount would be applied to the cost of the house when we DO buy it.

FH called me this morning to tell me that his parents decided that we are to pay them $1200/ month and it's strictly to be rent. This money is NOT going to be applied to whatever we would be paying for the house in a year or 2, AND they have no intention of applying the money that he has already spent on fixing up the house. He went ballistic. He told them as of today, he will not be doing anything else in the house and if they want it fixed, they have to pay for someone to come in and do it.

They think they're doing us a big favor but it's really not if we have no vested interest in the house, you know? If we have something in writing saying that we'd be 'renting to own' and that some of the money will be applied, that's all we want!

I don't know what we're going to do now...

Sorry to hear you are going thru this. It s*cks dealing with family for stuff like this. Have him talk to his parents again after he calms down so he doesn't start screaming at them. Maybe they will come to there senses.

I just can't believe they're telling us this, now! And I am convinced it has something to do with the fact that FH's parents were in CA this weekend visiting his uncle (Mom's brother). I bet he wants the house or something and that's why this all came up. UCK!!
