Just what exactly is the 20% 'Service charge' at RH?
FH are trying to figure out tips and we're not sure if the 20% includes gratuity b/c our BM said that you usually give $5 per person as a tip for the Maitre D who spreads it around to everyone.

i think the 20% is the gratuity. i don't think an additional tip is neccessary.

ask the hall- sometimes it is 'service charge' sometimes it is 'gratuity'- ask your BM what it is being used for- that should clear it up.

At my RH, the 20% is not gratuity. It's a fee that covers the salaries for the waitstaff that night.

The service charge is the gratuity. but worded as such on the invoice, it is subject to sales tax. Gratuity is not. This is given to the staff. The maitre'd is separate from this gratuity/service charge, which is why he or she is given a separate envelope. $5 pp is a lot for the maitre' d.
I'd double check with your BM. Something doesn't sound right.

I just talked to her on the phone (BM is the Maitre d) and she said $5 pp is the norm plus $150 for the bridal attendant. We are having 220 people at our wedding so she gets $1100??? That's nuts.

The 20% does not include gratuity, it goes to pay the waitstaff's salary along with other misc expenses (like general wear and tear for the use of the location).

it goes to the waitstaff. you are supposed to tip your maitre'd above that....every time I call my hall they kindly 'remind' me its $3-$5pp.

We were told $2 pp as well for the maitre'd. The service charge does not include the bartender, whom we may choose to tip or allow to leave a tip jar out.

I'm laughing as I read this - of course your BM is going to tell you that $5 is the norm - because she gets it ! $150 for the bridal attendant I can understand, because she is pretty much your shadow for the entire day.
Any input from the newlyweds ? I'm going home and reading my contract tonight. I am almost sure that the wording is gratuity @ 18%

i worked at a catering hall and the 18% or in ur case 20% is supposed to go the wait staff.. then its $3 pp for the maitre d and if they tell u more they just tryna get money out of u bc the maitre d only gets a small percentage of the tip.. the rest goes to the hall and $100 is fine for the bridal attendant.. anything more and they better be ur best friend, and the best service u ever got.

Re: Just what exactly is the 20% 'Service charge' at RH?
i was at my hall yesterday for the final drop off and this is the way they expalined it. they suggest 50 - 100 for the bridal attenant. they suggest 3-5 pp for the matre d'. but the tip for the matre'd gets split about 10 ways between other various staff. she also concluded by sayin that we should NOT tip in the beginning of the wedding rather at the end of the night and that they only give sugestions and that we may make our own decision based on our personal experience and excellent service. i was pleased with that.

That is alot for the Maitre D. How many people are you having? The tip for them is norm $2-4 pp. They say they divide it among the chefs etc. However I heard they usually keep it all.

The service charge is usually for the servers @ the RH, does not include the MD or BA!

Re: Just what exactly is the 20% 'Service charge' at RH?
Hmm.....my RH hasn't even suggested $2-4 per person for the Maitre'd.......rather, they sugggest 5-9% of the entire bill (before service charge and taxes)!!!! My BM said that it is split among the Matre'd, captains, bartenders, chef, Bridal Attendant, and even the BM gets a cut, too. Is this normal???

Yes, but they are also getting paid a good salary and I don't know too many people who deserve over $1100 as a tip for one day's work!
