Kathy116 - Orchid?

I to love Orchids. I have 2 right now. One is just about to flower again. I read on the internet that you are supposed to cut the long stem back so that they reflower. My Dh mixed up the plants so I am not sure which is which & I don't want to cut them back.

Are you supposed to cut the long stem?

After it's done flowering and the flowers are brown, or have fallen off, cut back the stem, I don't' cut it all the way down to the base, because I've noticed that sometimes it'll flower again out of that cut stem, like on the side of it.

I usually leave like 3-4 inches of the stem left, but it varies on the type of orchid (at lease I vary it).
Which type do you have?
Ones like oncidium that have thin stems, I'll cut almost all the way down to the base, but thicker stemmed ones like Phalenopsis, I'll leave it a bit longer.

Thanks for the info. I have the phalenopsis. I love them. I don't want to kill them. I don't know how they have lasted this long. Plants and I don't usually get along. lol

You won't kill them...there's a pretty big misconception that orchids are very fragile and easy to kill...they are the quite low maintance ...I Love them.

Here's a pic of the stem that I clipped 6 months ago, and you'll see the flower that's currently in bloom grew out of that clipped stem. I also have another spike (stem) out of that plant.

You have to see this orchid...I love this one, the latest addition to my ever growing collection.
