Keep your name, add his to the end, hyphonate or change?

hrmm Im still not sure..

My office has 3 other 'me's so I get email for people in Puerto Rico and email for Uraguay. Changing my name would be helpful at work.

Changing my name would mean people would stop assuming I speak spanish.

But.. well... Im sorta proud of my father's name

Being hispanic I could just add Jim's name.. but that would make my middle initials N.O. hehe
Veronica NO!

anyone else thinking like or am I being a*nal

I am definitley changing mine to his- although he is taking the Italian out of my name But I really want our kids to have the same name as me too! I joke with him that he is taking the pureity(sp?) out of me- He laughs back and says he didnt make me unpure I have such an uncommon last name though - I will miss it!!

I agree with the uniqueness issue.

My grandfather's family literally came off a reservation. They picked their name from a land formation in Airzona.. it's oddly enough a common Spanish name (go fig)

My grandfather was adopted by his older uncles because his mother was too young to keep him (back in the day). My greatgrandmother later married and had children. They all have a different name. Those two uncles died childless.. we are now a dying breed.

Adding to weridness, My biological mother (grumble, spit) is a 1st generation american. Her family is from Spain (nope, I still don't speak spanish).

It's my name. If my kids were born... I'd actually want them to have them both as well. If that were possible. I handle international clients.. you know other countries its very normal for a woman to keep her name?

I said I was going to hyphonate my name for the longest. Mike was kool about it. I said I would mainly use his name and just hyphonate it so I could still have a part of my family and my life that has been me for 23 years with me. plus I wouldnt have to change all my credit cards ETC. Lately when I talk about he gets a litle upset. and doesnt understand why I want to hyphonate! I give up

my last name is ten letters
his last name is ten letters
hyphenating is not an option because i'm too lazy for that sort of thing!!!

so i'm going to take his last name, although my lst name is really unique and i like it because no one has ever heard it, so i ilke that....but i want to take his last name because i think it's an honor to have that option...

I'm pretty sure I'm going to drop my middle name, make new middle name my maiden name and add FH's last name at the end.

I'll change my last name and probably keep my middle initial as is.

I have a good last name that can also be a first name, so I decided that I will take his last name but my daughter will have my last name as her first. Also my daughter will have my first name as her middle, since my middle name is my mom's name, so It would be very confusing if I hyphenated since 3 of my 4 names, my daughter would have just in a different order.

I am also glad to be taking his name, since I am 1/2 italian and no one believes me when I tell them, since I have an english last name, and am very pale.

Yikes, I'm going for my marriage license today at 10:00 and have to sign something. We will not be having children, so that's not an issue. I was going to hyphenate, but last week the strangest thing happened. He came to me and said 'I think you should just keep your last name. Why bother changing it on everything?' He said he wouldn't be offended. I'll still answer to Mrs. hisname, I won't cut people off and correct them, but legally I'll just keep the same name I've had all my life. I can always change it later.

FYI, you don't actually have change your last name when you apply for your marriage license. If you change your mind one way or the other, you can use whichever last name you want, and by common usage, it will be your last name. If you are certain that you want to change it, go for it.

As for me, I'm changing my last name for all purposes except professional. My last name is one syllable and very simple, but FI's is long and, although not unusual, the spelling of it is, and it really skrews people up. I also earned my law degree with this last name and have been practicing law with it and that's how I am becoming recognized. I don't want to hyphenate because that's just a pain in the tush. So, as far as all my governmental and legal documents are concerned, I will be changing my last name, but as far as my job is concerned, my name will not change. I want to have the same last name as my husband and children and feel like a family in all respects, but that doesn't mean that the name that I have now doesn't represent a different aspect of my life that will continue after I get married.

I have no idea if that made any sense...I haven't had my caffiene yet!

You're making sense! I'm having my caffiene right now! And thanks for the advice! I also have a simple, 4 letter last name, and fi has a big long name. I thought however I signed the marriage license would become my legal last name, and I've been kinda stressing over it because I didn't know what to do. I do independent and consulting work and I definitely want to keep my name professionally.

Re: Keep your name, add his to the end, hyphonate or change?

I just went for my marriage license on Friday and this was a big stress point for me- i didn't think i would be as freaked out about it as I was and my FI and I had MANY discussions about it. I am a lawyer and I want to keep my maiden name professionally, that's the name i went to law school with, passed the bar with and got admitted with. I definitely want to uses my FI's name in my married life - bank accounts, kids, family life...SO, I finally decided to have my old last name and his last name this way I can use both. It's a hard decision but make sure you are comforatble with whichever one you choose- good luck!

yep..
That made sense.
My last name is 5 letters two syllables... very spanish and common

His last name is one syllable and 2 letters ... very chinese and common

I want his name for the office because it would make my job so much easier. People from our office in Spain or other spanish speaking countries constantly call me assuming I speak spanish. Plus theres the fact that I'd be the only Veronica hisname as opposed to one of the three Veronica myname.

We talked about this last night. We really just wouldnt want our children to have problems. So I think I may end up hyphonating my name legally and the kids will have his name.

My middle name is really funky unique. It's also my aunt's first name. I love that no one can guess my middle name 'N' and it's fun. Do I want to give that up? I dunno.

I dropped my middle name and made my last name my new middle name and took his last name. It was important to him that I take his last name and I still wanted a part of myself so it was the best option for us

I'm traditional when it comes to some things and taking FH's last name is one of them. My first name is hyphenated, so hyphenating the last name too would just be dumb! The ONLY way I would have kept my last name is if I would have gotten my Doctoral degree before getting married....since I haven't even started, looks like I'm giving my last name up!
