Kids At The Wedding

Original post by October Bliss

For those of you NOT having kids at the wedding, did you have a cutoff age?

If you are inviting small kids, (and choose to respond) please state whether your reception is day or evening.

Re: Kids At The Wedding

we are having children - saturday evening wedding-who are in the immediate family come... not friend's kids or 2nd cousins kids...
3 of which are in the bridal party- and 2 of which are flying in from FLorida and i would never have two siblings(BP) and not the other- so family it is... Fh's brother is 9 years old...of course he would be there
- It is a formal affair that happens to have some children- they will be fine and I honestly wouldnt want them not there, i am so close to them!

We are having early teen kids there (who in some way or form are part of the wedding) and the youngest one is the RB who will be three by then. Most guest will be invited w/o their kids.

I had 4 kids in my bridal party all 13 and under. Their cousins were there too 13 and 8. There were some cousins that were too young-under 3 that I didn't invite. So I guess if you weren't in the bridal party the age was 8.

The only kids we are having are my first cousins, they will all be high school age except one who I think will be 12 (only 5 will be under 18). We used the 18 + up rule on more distant relatives.

Re: Kids At The Wedding

This is the dilemna I'm having, FH thinks it is perfectly acceptable for kids over the age of 5 to attend a wedding. IMHO, since our recpetion doesn't end until midnight, this is inappropriate. He also thinks it is inappropriate to invite people we know without their SO (even if they found their SO the day the wedding invite arrived in the mail), or invite anyone we (read HE) know without their kids. He also doesn't think a kid should be invited without their sibling.

If I follow his rule, this means all my first cousins have to be invited with their kids. I have one cousin who has a 13 year old, (that I'm willing to give a job handing out programs at ceremony so it looks like she's part of BP) but all the others have kids between 3-10. So, even though he thinks 3 is too young, since said 3 year old has a brother that is 6 they should both be invited. I was sort of counting on these cousins not coming to the wedding, (I've only met 4 of them once) but I'm relatively sure that at least one of them will attend if they can bring their kids. This also means yet another cousin (if invited with a guest) will in all likelihood bring a prostitute as he did to my sister's wedding. (his mom, my aunt is completely naive and thinks this woman is his GF - trust me, she's not). And these are only some of the kids from my side. The kids from his side, plentiful! His two nephews (15 & 16 at the time of the wedding, and part of it as ushers), his cousins 2 kids (7 & 11), BM's step-daughter (13), GM's step-daughter (obnoxious 16 year old), and I think there are at least 5 other kids that are between 10-13.

I don't want all these kids at my wedding!!! How can I make him see that this just isn't a good thing. He keeps responding with 'then people won't come' to which I respond, 'that's fine, we can't afford them anyway'. He says we each get 62 people to invite. I told him I would just rather elope if I can't have my friends at the wedding because he wants to have his friend's kids!!

HELP!!!!!!!!!!

WOW!!!

First off, I would try and talk to him about the finances; why would you pay for a child that's not gonna eat; an 'elegant' wedding is not a wedding that has more kids than adults; as for the younger kids: they are going to be running around which might not be a good idea (food and drinks being served); most parents look forward to a night out w/o the kids and weddings are the perfect affair.

Hope this helps!!

We are allowing kids of close family and friends only- there aren't many of them. There are distant family members on FH side that aren't getting kid invites and they are just below 18. I don't have a problem with kids at the wedding- if it was night time it'd be up to the parents if they want to bring them. I'm having a day wedding tho so it's OK. We don't have kids in the BP except for FH nephew who will be 7 months old and the ring bearer- he'll be pushed in the stroller by FH SIL so they have a part....hopefully he'll be sleeping!

We're having a Sunday day wedding. We are having children at the wedding, 4 of whom are in my bridal party. We are having someone on-site all day who will entertain the kids if they need to be entertained, if you know what I mean.

THe only kids at my wedding will be the BP, other than that we had a cutoff, basically if they couldn't walk, or go to the bathroom by themselves, they were not invited.

THat sounds terrible, but we couldn't do it

We really don't have too many kids in our families so we lucked out. There will only be my neice and 2 nephews (1 is in the BP), and my cousin who is 14. Other than that, no kids.

Our cutoff is first cousins, which happens to include a few kids (3 of which are in the bridal party), aged 2 and a 1/2 - 12.
